Toys came in the post today... 89mm holsesaw and suitable arbor... Which will be used to create spaces for these... Like so... I had a little oops moment as I finish cutting the last panel. For whatever reason the guard on the circular saw didn't spring back (or spring back quickly enough), and when I sat it down on the garage floor as it was spinning down, there was noise, sparks, swearing, a 3" gash in the garage floor and a saw blade for the bin... At least it wasn't a foot, or face. Just popped them up, backed with some caulk against the frame to prevent any vibrations during movie loudness, and relieved that everything is centred, symmetrical and generally where I expected it to be... Ordered a couple more rack shelves today, some 250mm ones for switch, router and sonos, which means only one more shelf needed, that being a ~450mm vented one for the server. I'm not in any great hurry (the server currently consists of only an empty case, so ventilation it needs not) so just cruising ebay and making low-ball offers until I get something that works. I'm pretty sure I've found the the cornice to go around the inside of the tray as well, so samples in the post - http://www.wmboyle.co.uk/images/productPhoto/c339enlarge.gif Sadly it's not entirely inexpensive at £20/m, but I have yet to find anything else that will fit quite so well in a style I like. This one is 140mm tall so with bottom edge flush with the tray the top edge would be 25mm from the ceiling, so pretty much perfect for the lighting to peek over. And that's all for a couple weeks, folks. I'm in California this weekend and the first half of next week for work, and then having a much deserved short break with the Mrs after that
This is amazing, I would love to do something like this. Is there any reason you decided to point the lights downwards rather than upwards? IMO pointing them up would give a softer, more evenly distributed light.
I've had to stop myself taking the quick /easy option or getting too far ahead of myself and missing something more times than I can count now. It helps to just dip in and out of working on it and I've gotten a lot better since starting it at pre-empting materials, fixings, tools etc that I'll need through the following week and getting orders in (I refuse to pay 5-10x Amazon/Ebay prices for small fixings etc by going to B&Q et al). There will be uplights of sorts, by way of a LED strip that goes round the inner part of the tray ceiling - though this wouldn't be enough to provide full room lighting (for the odd occasion when it's needed, anyway), so have opted to put in some spot lights as well. They're tilt fittings, and will be angled towards the walls slightly, as opposed to facing straight downwards - when looking for ideas and inspiration on forums, pinterest etc, any time I came across a home cinema with spots lining and lighting the walls I really liked the effect, so, here we go!
A bit of research, basic DIY skills and confidence is all that's needed. And more importantly an understanding wife!
Pretty sure all that's needed for the last point is for said wife to be able to enjoy the awesome room whenever she wants.
Life is simple without another half, everything is twice three times as complex once you add one into the equation I've been given a week next year to sort all the AV, as the ceiling and fireplace need to be plastered I can make a mess when the carpet is up for that and chase in conduit/cable before she re-decorates.
Try throwing a child or three into the mix and the complexity begins to be measured on a logarithmic scale.
