I'm ready to pull the trigger on new parts - I'm unsure whether to sli my 580 for a stop gap until the next round of cards, or drop £800 on 2 670 4GBs (If I can get hold of them). I wanted to go 3770/Gene too, but the added heat has put me off.. tho I will be WCing. My budget is £1200 - £1500 Edit: Page 3 is where the IHS removal pictorial begins /dizzi
Heh, not sure if serious. How much performance gain over 670s will that extra £400 give me? I wish to go high end but that level of diminishing return is too rich for me.. I'm thinking EVGA 670s is the best bet gpu wise.. Need to check their new warranty/step up stuff out.. Would like to be covered if the new round of cards come sooner than expected.. Any thoughts on a more extravagent mobo and cpu?
If you're going water cooling and GTX 670 then the only real option to my mind is a Gigabyte GTX 670. It's basically a reference GTX 680 PCB so should be compatible with an EK water block and backplate. I've studied the PCB image of both the Gigabyte GTX 670 and reference GTX 680 and see no differences that would result in incompatibilities. Also the PCI-E sockets aren't stacked on the Gigabyte so it would look nicer than the pure reference GTX 680 board in my opinion.
See this is why I make threads like this. Cos' I always find something out before I make a mistake. Tho I still make mistakes sometimes So a ref GTX 670 is like 6.5 inches long when you take the cooler off I see. Waterblocks, if/when released are gonna look dinky. I'm guessing a matx board would be a really good idea to stop them looking like sound cards..
Still the question of how/if the memory will be cooled with a water block on the reference GTX 670. The Gigabyte GTX 670 follows the reference GTX 680 PCB so no such problem with opposing memory slots!
Thanks as always for the clarity blogins, nice to see nvidia make it easy for us serial upgraders again I don't wish to start another video ram debate, however, I don't want to spend £800+ on new cards with a measly 512MB more than I have now - unless I've missed a 4GB version from gigabyte..
Stupid premium for 4GB cards at the moment! I went for the Gigabyte GTX 670 and also play through a U2711. Get my card tomorrow if Parcel Force manage to deliver! I'll see how well it manages on its own at 2560 by 1440 but I can imagine I'll be pulling the trigger on a second Gigabyte GTX 670 if it all goes well and I like the card in the flesh. Only other card I'd consider is the ASUS Direct CU II, but then the question if EK will deliver a water block for that particular model.
Awesome, so are you still running 460s on your u2711 or the 480? Is the 670 going in the fractal? Its a bit of a quandary for me, this is my first full fat WC rig and have already spent a lot just on a case and parts for the loop as I want to nail this one. Its a toss up between giving my 580 a playmate with 2 blocks and wait for the next round of cards or hope I can get the most futureproof hardware I can now - as I think this build will have to last me like my xp system did back in the day (like 4 - 5 years)...
These beauties have appeared on overclockers and scan... Is there a reason not to? I'm planning to place my order tonight. I understand the ram chips are on the other side of the pcb but i'm not big on overclocking aside from a bit of fun benching and I'm guessing the backplates will help a bit? Someone give me a reason not to, my wallet is getting itchy..
Cards aren't due for over a week so wait it out. Maybe EK will announce more water cooling solutions. They recently stated the ASUS DCII will be getting a block!
I was assuming first come first serve if I pre order... kepler is getting a rep as the 'out of stock' range..
I would not guarantee the price for the GTX670 4GB is going to stay that low. I'm very sure when it comes available it will shoot up to £500+
So far I am pleased I got a 2gb card. Who knows what the future holds for games and vram but atm I am glad I didn't spend the extra that being said if you are going sli and spending that much money I guess for peace of mind it would be nice
680 Classifieds will be out in a couple of weeks. Not sure on your resolution, but a single one of those maywell do you.
Glad I went 2GB as well! In Battlefield 3 at 2560 by 1440 I have all settings on Ultra that go that far otherwise it's High. AA is turned off along with Ambient Occlusion and Anisotropic Filtering set to x2. It's all super smooth and maintains around 60FPS (VSYNC ON), the only slow down is when an explosion kills me! Then it can drop off to 30FPS or less but I'm dead anyway, doesn't interrupt gameplay in the slightest. VRAM usage is under 1.5GB.
Too late - ordered Agree with you Simon, plus the stock levels - so I've hopefully grabbed two now, when they are released. dead beat - 1440p I've wanted 2 high end cards for a while for certain games.. the vram is just potential insurance, plus better potential resale value Due on the 31st, pull your finger out EK!
Aren't all 670 4 gbs pre order only at the min If pricing is anything like the 680 has gone its just not worth it Palit 680 2gb is £419 Palit 4gb £597 ( on scan today ) Insane premium for 0 fps even if your future proofing you could save the £400 + extra and buy a new card then that will come with more ram
You're right rollo pre order. If all goes well it will still be June 1st before they arrive, but that suits me to finish a few other bits. It has cost me an extra £65 per card for 4GB over the 2GB superclocks but that might pay me back in the long run. I've been hemorrhaging money in this hobby from day one, why try to break the habit! I got the shits when 1.5GB wasn't enough on the 580 @ 1440p and would rather pay the extra £130 to be sure and have a little futureproofing
