Notebooks installing new hdd

    Hey guys ive filled my 40 gig so im dropping ina 120 gig. I want to know how to copy everythng.. files and OS from one drive to the other. what software and some idiot proof instructions.

    you can connect both drives to a desktop computer and transfer that way...

    so i take it i just format the new drive and install them both into my desktop and use something like norton ghost to do the transfer, then pop the drive back into my laptop?

    Um, no.

    If you install it on your desktop all your drivers will be done for your desktop. I'd hazard a guess to say it wont even boot. Why cant you just bung and XP CD into your lappy and do a fresh install?

    There's no easy way around replacing a laptop HDD I'm afraid.
    So as Bindi has suggested... you're gonna have to format the [new] drive, and re-install everything from scratch.

    You should obviously backup any files you need to keep from the old drive first... but then I'd suggest reformatting it too... buying yourself an external 2.5" enclosure, and using it [the old drive] as a backup drive, or for storing music/video files, or for downloads etc etc :idea:
