The thing that interests me most for this is the fact that people can do raspberry pi style art projects, but with an x86 system, which is obviously a lot more useful and quicker than faffing around with various linux distros etc.

I see a usefullness in rugged surroundings, if you put it in a fanless selfcooling case, it'd be dustproof, which wouldn't be bad.
It would make a good vehicle PC as well.

"I'm still not sure what an NUC offers over a custom-built mini-ITX".

Two words: Power Consuming. Aside that, I really see nothing except size.

I would love one of these as a movie streaming system/HTPC :p
Or as an upgrade to my current rig.
A crunchy mSATA SSD and some nice laptop RAM and you'd be good to go :D

^ This. I want this, or something like it, combined with a GPS receiver, a Peltier, a Bluetooth receiver and a battery. Put them in a custom-milled IP67-rated 7075-T6 aluminium alloy case, pair it with a micro display in the corner of my goggles and a iKey AK-39-NV wireless keyboard/mouse on my wrist, and voila, the ultimate skiing system. Tells me where I am, where I should be going, how fast, where everyone else is, records video from my camera, interfaces with my phone so I can read my messages and take calls without having to retrieve it from my bag - everything, and much more rugged than Google Glass.

    [EDIT]Oh - and unlike Glass, less than $1500, too![/EDIT]
