Blogs Is Nvidia's GTX 960 really a disappointment?

The GTX 660 launched at £180 and the GTX 660Ti launched at £240.

With the 960 starting at £160, the 960Ti will probably launch around £200/£210 mark, at best.

My guess is that if it wasn't for the 970 debacle, memory segmentation, or what ever you want to call it that we would have seen the 970 with 3GB ram on a 192-bit bus.

As it is because they can now disable less of the chip than before it has given them the ability to tailor cards to suit the target market better, we have two top end cards, then (if rumors are to be believed) we are going to have three mid-range cards, with the 660 being the lower end of the mid-range cards.

 

This argument depends too much on potential future price drops. You can argue that sometime down the road a 150 quid 960 and a 220-250 quid 960Ti will be great, but what we can discuss honestly is what we have. I also understand that the launch prices for 760 cards were quite a bit higher, but frankly it's not something that's important to me as a consumer in early 2015.

I guess one could rephrase this and say the the 960 launch is disappointing and maybe the card and product stack will make more sense within 2 or 3 months.

The most damning thing in my book is that the 960 at its launch price requires no response from AMD. When the R9 series launched, Nvidia had to cut prices of 7xx series cards. When 970/980 launched, the entire high-end R9 stack got price cuts to remain competitive. Does AMD have to do anything to prices of R9 280/280X/285 parts? Not really. And in my book, any new card that launches against products which are 15 (280X), 9 (280) and 5 (285) months old, that doesn't move the market is disappointing.

They can tout efficiency all they want, I like my PCs small and quiet. But at the end of the day, performance/quid has moved very little. For this card to make sense, it should have really been closer to 150 pounds.

 

How much closer to £150 do you want, after all they are only £10-20 over that.
Doesn't most new hardware come with an extra premium.

 

Always thought comparing top end cards of even 2 gens ago vs mid to low end cards was never a good idea.

The 970 and 980 have really reduced the prices of the older 680 780 770 range of cards. You could of picked up 2 770s for under £300 a few weeks back on a forum Im on.

Just depends at what this card launches at and where its price eventually settles at.

Nvidia has little reason to release a high performing mid range part that is 5% slower than the 970 as AMD has not produced a GPU for such a long time now that they have a free market.

Once AMD does come to market expect nvidia to counter with higher performing cards and price cuts + Gap fillers. ( Is it at the point where its IF it comes to the market. New info on AMD cards is becoming very hard to find at the moment)

 

Aren't AMD due to release some new cards with stacked memory, R9 380X or something.

 

@urobulos, a 960ti at 220 -250 would be horrible, the 970 can be had for 263 at scan.co.uk.
