Hi was on the computer when I smelt something burn but thought it may have been outside. After 5 minutes or so the computer dies and doesn't boot up anymore. I took the side cover off and felt the psu and it is very hot. I also had a feel at the CPU but that wasn't really hot, just below warm. I left the computer to cool down and switched off and on the mains power and tried o boot up. The computer twithes for half a second with the fans turning for half a second then it dies and nothing else happens. My motherboard, am old asus p5k premium has the green LED light and this is I think to show there is power to the board. The light is solid and not flashing. So is the problem my psu or is it something a lot worse? Thanks in advance.
The only way to check the PSU is to fit another 1, if it turns out not to be the psu you've at least ruled out 1 possible problem. Then we can start trying to diagnose where the problem is.
you can bridge the green and black wires on the atx plug and see if the psu jump starts http://www.overclock.net/faqs/96712-how-jump-start-power-supply-psu.html they do it with a paper clip in that guide, i usually use a bag tie since you can strip the end and it is insulated.
This method is fine but you still wont be able to send any power through to the mobo. It's fine for testing just about everything else.
all is working again. Bought a new Antec PSU and now is all working again. I opened up the old one and I could see some large round copper wire bound things slightly burnt and black so I guess it was that which melted and died.
What brand of PSU was it? Some are quite dodgy... particularly ColorsIT which have a habit of their electromagnets catching fire :/
it was an OCZ 750w power supply. not the modxstream but the other one that's cabled. Got an Antec Truepower New 650w now. happy days again.
Definitely. Even if they don't offer you a warranty replacement it's worth telling them about with some pics.
