    Painting:

    Hi Guys!

Has been a little while but i've been busy painting a lot of parts :D and as you all know a good paint job takes a lot of time.

This is a "guide" how i did it, photo's of the whole process will follow later (tomorrow):

    1
At first i removed all remaining stickers, dirt ect. with sticker remover and some thinner.
    2
After that a little sanding, most part needed just a quick rough up because they where painted before, for this i used 150grid sandingpaper there was no need to do any finer sanding because the paint will be matt black and it has to have a little rough surface for the looks and feel.
    3
Then i cleaned the parts again, i used an air gun to blow away the dust out of all the small corners and holes, followed by a good cleaning with metal degreaser.
    4
To get a nice even finish i gave all the part a coat of metal primer, also the plastic part got this.
The color of that was the kind of red you see on constructional steel a very nice one that i even considered keeping.
About 3 a 4 coats where applied off this paint, with 2 till 3 minutes in between after that it had to dry 24 hours.
    5
Then came out the matt black paint wich also was applied with the same process with 3 a 4 coats.

And after that you will get something like this:
Not a very clear picture but it is a very matt black with a little rough surface, just like the doctor ordered it :D
The looks off a very tough (industrial) material.

As said tomorrow i post some more (beter) pics, and some assembled stuff, the PSU unit for example.

    Comments/suggestions anyone?

    Regards, Bas van der Werff.

Thanks :thumb: i saw your update of today looking very good :D

The brand of the primer i used (also useable for wood) is " 't stilleven " probably only available in holland the type is "vullende primer" wich translates as "filling primer" i bought it at the "praxis" wich is a dutch hardwarestore.

The matt black paint also came from the same store, it's their homebrand "praxis" not very expensive but it is a good quality i've used the same combination of paints on a bike a few years ago and it still look good.

Btw the stuff i used for degreasing is called "metaal ontvetter" wich is metal degreaser of a more known brand called "hammerite" i think you can get it outside of holland.
It works very good but it's really aggressive stuff and you should wear some protection and ventilate.

Later today a new update :)

    Almost finished PSU unit

    Hi Guys!

Not having a lot of time to mod today but i did rebuild the PSU unit.

And because i'm a organised wiring freak i ziptied (is that a word??) the corresponding colors together :hip: offcourse with Black ones.

I know it will never be visible again but i can't stand choas in wiring, if you have to build (large) data networks it comes with the job i think :cooldude:

    And rebuild:
If i find the time i'll resolder the Watt meter and also start with drilling the holes where the wires will come through the lid of the box.

But first i'll go play with my new toy, a drill press :naughty:

    Later, Bas van der Werff.

    HDD grill

    Hi Guys!

Today i did some work of the front of the case mainly the grill that will be in the bottom part.

As you might know a while ago i designed this HDD rack:

Which is almost finished, just needs some sanding and painting.

    I will place it here:
All the way on the bottom of the case.

To cool the harddrives there will be three 120mm fan's in the front of the case with the top one mostly blowing cool air into the case.
I didn't want to use the standard mesh bay covers that come with the stacker but i couldn't find an other solution that would look good :(
Until i visited the workplace of my best friend (they build packing machines) and found some very cool stainless steel:
Here lying on a piece off MeshX, as you can see the grill has very nice large holes (20mm) and after measuring i found out that the size i needed wouldn't need cutting halfway through holes, so it would look if it was made for it.
And after asking i got a large piece for free :D thanks mate :thumb:

So i cut the MeshX to size:
And this is how it will look, i will have to grind down the edges to make it fit in between.

When finished it will look like this:
Don't mind the size of the holes or the two fans that are shown behind it, this was just testing how it would look (it was designed before i got the stuff)

Also the colors will be flipped the mesh will recieve some polishing and the stainless will be matt black just like the rest of the front.

That was it for today i hope you like the design, suggestions and comments are welcome.

    Regards, Bas van der Werff.

    RAD placement

Hi Guys! a second update for today

Thanks :D i also hope it will work out i still have a lot of sanding to do on the grill stainless steel is a hard material to work on :grr:

Because i had the angle grinder out to make the grill to size i thought why not try to make the first radiator fit in place.

I want to place it here:
Normally a 120mm fan fits there.

But i want to have the fan suck air from the case through the radiator, and that would need the radiator on the inside and the fan on the outside, but the rad just wouldn't fit there.

So i got out the angle grinder and...
Cut some notches in the frame (still need to be cleaned up)

    Would it fit...
    Almost.

And after a little work with a file:
A perfect fit, the tolerance is very small only 1mm side to side, up and down it is zero tolerance :p

This is how it look on the back:
As you can see i still have to cut in the frame to make the fan fit, and after that i have to make a plate to be able to mount the fan and rad to the frame that will come tomorrow :dremel:

Also later tonight i will update the first post with a hardware list.

    Regards, Bas van der Werff.

What should i do with the grill???

    Thanks :D

    Hi Guys!

Today i started work on preparing of the grill part for paint and polish, i mean this part:

My initial idea was to switch the colors so polish the mesh and paint the stainless steel matt black.
At the point i'm right now i can still go both ways, i like the way it looks right now but maby it will look even better the other way around.

I'll set up a poll for it so you can share your opinion, in the mean while i'll go work on the radiator mounting.

    Poll

1 Paint the mesh matt black and polish (or chrome?) the stainless steel.
    2 The other way around.
    3 Your own idea ??

I'll let some people share their opinion and decide then.

    Regards, Bas van der Werff.

    And a close up:

It's just sitting there for the photo so that's why it is a bit croucked.
