Isn't this a bit of a problem with a lot of the ship sales, in that we don't really know how gameplay for some of these ships will work, and there are some fundamental concepts that don't appear to have been nailed down yet that could have a massive impact on how things work and ultimately how much fun they actually are!

I know that everyone who's backed SC has taken a bit of a leap of faith to do so, but for me buying some of these expensive ships when we don't know how they'll play is a bit of a leap of faith too far, at least until some of the more fundamental game concepts get nailed down.

Very jealous.... LOVE that ship. Would have it over any other ship (except maybe Javelin)

    Oh for sure!

I'm honestly not even 100% sure that flying and playing in big ships is going to be fun AT ALL.

If that is the case then Merchantman is very much getting melty melty and it will invested in smaller ships instead.

Does anyone with a Starfarer care to comment? I know a lot of the mechanics of these ships are not in game yet, but is it an absolute boring pig to fly?

It'll be a massive disappointment if big ships aren't fun to play and fly :( It's stuff like the 890J that I worry about - it's a space bus, and who wants to be a space bus driver? And not just a space bus, a ridiculously expensive space bus :D

It's the same for stuff like science ships: what gameplay will flying/working on one of these involve, and will it actually be remotely entertaining? I have my doubts!

Big time for those science ships.... I can't really imagine how they are going to make that fun at all.

That is the good thing about military vessels.... shooting guns is always awesome!

It'll suck the boaby big time if the only fun ships to fly are fighters, though.

Absolutely - I reckon mining will be a pretty interesting experience too - quite easy to make that dynamic!

That is my issue with the Merchantman - in my head it was more of a blockade runner.... a Freddie Stobbart space lorry isn't quite what I had in mind, even if it is massive.... trading in Elite is incredibly dull (though actually, most of Elite is incredibly dull)

I don't own one but did 'borrow one' in the Mini PU. Under current flight mechanics for it, it not exactly like flying a Super Hornet etc but you do seem to get a nice combination of 'feeling the weigh' of the ship and it having reasonable maneuvering for the sheer size of it!
I was also lucky enough for someone to let me take their Caterpillar for a a spin and again I was surprised at how nice to fly it was given its extremely long length and off-side engine placement.

Your never going to be able to get in a turn fight with a smaller ship and win but I get the impression for some ships, that the combat will be a case of smaller ships making strafing run on bigger ships (as sitting still in a small ship leaves you vulnerable to your targets turrets or other ships/escorts) and the bigger ship will be trying to line up turret shots or main gun shots on the return strafe.
If you have ever fought in a Constellation, it has quite a lot of 'staying power' and very powerful forward facing guns but is slow compared to a Sabre or Avenger and can't out-turn a Hornet or Mustang.

I also don't think every combat encounter will end in the destruction of ships, from PU experience even when you get the jump on someone, things don't always go to plan, I have been out fought, made silly mistakes, had others wade into the melee unexpectedly, had allies turn up or just been plane unlucky!
Fleeing to live and fight another day carries no shame ha ha!

Edit: I also imagine bigger ships will take some time to 'charge' their jump drives, so it's not like you can always avoid combat etc.

I've got the Starfarer, Orion and Crucible so have invested quite heavily into the industry side of this game.

I do have some minor concerns about the gameplay that is going to be offered for these kind of vessels but at the same time I know that if if comes down to it, I can melt them down and switch to something else. I'd say the Crucible is my biggest concern for a lack of gameplay/need as I'd imagine you'd have to weigh up between using a ship to repair/refit against docking in a hangar... I suppose it depends if there are areas of space that will have no stations with easy access.

In terms of transport type ships, I'm not too concerned about those as I can quite happily just spend a day travelling for no reason.

I'd say that the ideal place for your Crucible during the early days of the game, would be on the trailing edge of "Operation Pitchfork" (A player-originated retalliation against Vanduul attacks). :thumb:
It would also be the ideal spot for anyone with a Reclaimer.

That sounds like a good idea for testing it out, hopefully it'll not be a total sitting duck when someone's ship comes in for repairs. Ideally you'd want to be able to move, maybe a little more sluggish while servicing a ship, to avoid the heavy fire from enemy ships.

Depending how mining works, I'd imagine it could have potential to be a useful ship for mining operations.

Nice to see your still around Cei, not seen you post on this thread for a while. The fleet roster needs an update, Polaris is still missing. Can't wait to help you man yours :thumb:

So i'm happening on a new idea that i wanted to sense check first.

Either buying a $6 Super Hornet to Banu Defender CCU or an $18 Sabre to Banu Def CCU
    Or
Melting the Sabre and (if I have calculated it correctly) buying the NON warbond Edition of the Banu defender, costing an addition $7.60 on top of the $170 i'd get back from meting the Sabre.

The former gives me more long term choice for upgrading the two fighters (a long term plan of mine anyway!) and is fairly cheap, without having to melt anything.
The latter really cheap and if I am correct, would give me 'buy back' tokens, initially for the Sabre & Later for the defender?

The loaner ship for the Benu Def is the X'ian Scout which would be cool for a bit but I don't want to be long term deprived of the Sabre while combat is the main focus of the mini PU.

    Any thoughts?

I mean, do you actually want the banu defender? On paper it doesn't look great so far.

i'm on the fence. I don't want it per say but given that I can recycle pledge funds and rebuy with tokens if required, why not maximise potential future options?

I'd not spend much new money but $5-10 from time to time is harmless enough I think.

ATV - Frankfurt Office and deep dive of the QA teams.

Surface outpost lighting looking good, and the work done on the transitions from surface to space is a GREAT thing (13:04). Much less popping, which was my biggest bugbear from the procedural planets v2 demo last Citizen Con that was pure pop-up and glitching.

I saw a gif of that lighting clip. People on reddit were going a bit wild for it. If I'm honest I can't see what the excitement is about.

I'm on AtV!!!! :D (At the back of the BritizenCon selfie Brian took - shown at 1:20)

I also managed to get a "Gamescom presentation" ticket later that day, so a couple hours this weekend will be devoted to balancing nights & flights to find the best deal for a weekend in Cologne.

Yeah, I thought it looked decent. It was more that they can change the mood and atmosphere of these standardised landing zones so we don't get bored going to the exact same building to shoot X or deliver Y (see: Elite Dangerous).

Congrats Ian, you should screengrab and highlight yourself in paint for us all to see :thumb:

I hope to get to a event one day, maybe one in the US as I've never been. Would give me an excuse to go.

Citizen Con 2018 will most likely be in Austin, Texas
