Hi All, I've been given the go ahead by work to buy myself a new laptop / ultrabook for travelling, but have no idea whats good anymore. I'd ideally like a 13" or smaller, with, if humanly possible, a NON-glossy screen I'd imagine 8GB and a fairly small SSD as all my work documentation is cloud based anyway. In terms of other connectvitity, a USB would be nice, but will settle for some kind of dongle that comes with it, and Bluetooth would be incredibly useful. Cheers
I bought an HP EliteBook 840 G3 recently, and I've been well pleased with it. Battery is ace, it's light, and it's got decent connectivity inboard (even an LTE modem). ...It might not be quite 'ultrabook-y' enough though?
I recently bought an ASUS Zenbook UX305CA and I'm very happy with it - 13" 3200x1800 matte screen, very thin and light so good for travelling, 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD. The one I went for has the Core M 6Y30 processor and so was cheaper than the version with the 6Y54 processor.
the xps13 is glossy iirc, but it's what most seem to recommend... Potential alternatives - Lenovo X1 Carbon Surface Pro 4
The X1 Carbon I decided was a bit 'average' (had one at work for a bit), and the 840 G3 has a matte screen. It's what tipped the balance that way for me.
I just realised that mine's a 14" isn't it, and you said 13". I'll go to the bottom of the class. In a previous job I had an 820 G2 though and thought that was ace - again, no glossy screen. Yes, I used to have a 12" laptop, but I didn't use it as a rule...
Well the touch screen is glossy but the non touch is matte. Edit: I have an XPS of each display type in front of me because reasons. Unless my definition of glossy is way off the 1080p non-touch is not glossy.
Another vote for the ASUS Zenbook UX305 series. I have had mine for over a year and I love it. Battery lasts ages and it's still very quick too. Be sure to change the SSD, though, as the stock one in some models is dreadfully slow. My original Zenbook was fast, but the second one had a 4k IOPS SSD and it was extremely slow. I guess it depends what they can get for cheap at the time. Mine had a webcam failure, but it has been solid after that. The one that I have is the 1080P model as it is sharper and 3200x1800 on a 13" is crazy!
Xps 13 is definetly glossy. /me pats his precious. I have the silly resolution one, but only way I could get an i7 and 16gb ram. Considered a lattitude 7270? Pretty capable machines. Less glam than an Xps but I think they weigh in around 1.4 to 1.5kg. Outlet regularly has them on too
If you look on the website you will see some XPS 13 are anti-glare displays marked AG while others like yours aren't.
The new UX390UA severely lacking the ports dept though... only a USB-C and a headphone jack going off the photos. As an aside, whoever is in charge of ASUS' model naming/numbering needs a good hard slap.
Peter Jones have the Zenbooks and the XPS in, so i'll go and have a play... I'd like to be able to tolerate the glossy screen of the XPS as the extra connectivity would be useful, as i don't want to have to lug around dongles to meetings.
Went for the XPS 13. 7200, 8GB and the 256GB PCIE SSD, and the MATTE screen. Will give you my thoughts when it arrives. Thanks all.
Welcome to the club. Still love mine, though wife has been eyeing it up. Gives me an excuse to upgrade to the 9360 I spoke,
