My problem with the adverts at the moment?

    Large images warning

I guess I should be grateful that it's an ad for Star Trek and not ladies underwear (true story), but that's an awful lot of screen space wasted on what is essentially one advert...

Let's compare that with my other favourite tech site:

Look, I don't mind ads - I've used them to support my own sites in the past - but the current front page is bordering on intrusive (compared to theregister, it is intrusive)

Only on my desktop will I lower the adblock shields for bit-tech; all other devices I use are lower-powered machines (or crappy work machines which they're too stingy to upgrade), and the current front page slows them to a crawl... When I'm at work, the website that my eyeballs spend the majority of their time fixated on - ahem, when I'm on lunch, of course - isn't bit-tech.

I'm extremely glad that the forums have so far escaped relatively untouched.

    Not to nit-pick but

Site take overs are a popular way of re-branding a site to push your message. Lots of sites do them, and we try and keep ours relevant (Warfighter, Star Trek, Movie based on video games, etc).

I've been adblocking Bit Tech for ages now. I vowed never to do so, but since the advertising became intrusive I've had no choice.

This. If you've got a big problem with it, use adblocker. And I believe BT still get paid. Correct me if I'm wrong, though.

Not that straightforward, sadly. The more people who use adblocker, the less effective ads are, the less likely people are to book. I'm not trying to reopen the whole debate again - it's been quite a year for that - just answering your specific point!

tbh, I didn't find the Star Trek ad that bad (not that it made me watch TNG in HD - I don't have sky).

Jeezuz! I just got one of those popup ads that load a new popup when you close it. Is this 1998? Bit is starting to resemble a porn site.

...not that I've ever seen one of those.

It's the only way to view the forums. I actually do most of my viewing through Tapatalk which I take it doesn't show up on ad tracking numbers.

Same here, at least 70% of my viewing of this forum is done via Tapatalk for iOS now.

The issue that I have is that I only view bit as a forum and therefore I don't care about supporting the dying (if not already dead) review side.

I would be happy with a few adds to support the forum but I won't put up with the insane amount of adverts that it takes to prop up the review and news side of the site.

ads are killing site for me. They are a total ballache, with them being all over, poping up in different tabs, ones that appear over pictures blocking them and so on. They are only such a nuisance at work, as I can't run firefox with adblock plus like I do at home.
The ads on this site are out of control.

We've lost a lot of the more amusing and astute regulars over the past year, it's a shame but I think it's partially down to people growing out of the scene and partially because Bit seems to have lost its way. Other sites do hardware better (certainly more promptly), and a lot of the crowd here seem to be more into hardware/gaming rather than modding - which this site still does better than most.

Most of the hardcore modders rarely venture out of the project log section, an there are still a number of member here who linger exclusively in the marketplace, which I have said before is against the spirit of the community in my opinion.

I know this thread has pretty much reached the point where it's sounds like the same complaint voiced over and over, but I thought I'd leave another bit of feedback. Every time I load the Bit-tech front page I get an ad that overtakes the screen, blocking all content. I then get another pop-up when I close the first ad.

Sorry, but I've changed all my shortcuts to point directly to the forums now, bypassing the main page. I just don't appreciate full-page ads producing secondary pop-up ads.

I haven't frequented this forum in awhile, come back to a full page advert that covers the enter website for some university I don't give two $%@#$ about, a popup ad, and an ad covering one inch of the screen at the bottom of my screen. WTF. I only get this bombarded when I visit the shadier of sites on the web, not a website I actually care about. C'mon Bit-tech, this is ridiculous!
