I think that the Start Screen and Start Menu could be combined to provide the functionality of both. I haven't had time to draw up some concepts, but it would not be unlike Ubuntu 10.

Pretty sure there was a start replacement out that was like that. Basically looked like WP as a start menu.

Edit: not the one I was thinking of, but do you mean something like this Nexxo

    http://www.deskmodder.de/blog/2012/...menue-mit-startbutton-von-quadsoft-windows-8/

    http://www.addictivetips.com/window...-8-start-screen-on-just-half-of-your-display/

I think I was thinking of something similar to Start Menu Reviver, but from memory it looked different. No bar on left hand side. Unless I saw some older screenshots of it and it changed.....

Gotta agree cloud computing is defiantly the way forward, However I expect the internet in this country is going to be a limiting factor.

*download* speed is certainly improving, *upload* speed is the problem...

60 [soon to be 100] Mbit/s download is wonderful, 2Mbit/s upload [with throttling after uploading x amount] - not so...

I'm on 0.01 upload speeds so count yourself lucky ;) Stupid rural BT Broadband!

Stupid thing is I get 4G through my phone if only they did an unlimited tariff.. but I digress.

@Nexxo I would also like to see your design ;)

From memory, it looked similar to start menu reviver, but with no list on the left hand side and nothing on the right. Just a rectangular area that had tiles. Like I said, maybe it was just an old screenshot of one of those.

Start8 has a mode that lets you open the start screen in a small area on the desktop

So much for tailoring the desktop for tech savvy users.

Or are we going to see a split, with ARM-based Windows version without the desktop and x86/x64 Windows running both ?

Where are XP users moving to?

We will see a split. Windows 9 for ARM will be aimed at smartphones and tablets, and possibly ARM based cheap, lightweight netbooks designed to go up against the Chromebook. Windows 9 for PCs will continue to be full-fat with a desktop.

XP users are probably moving to tablets at home, and Windows 7 in business. Speaking for the NHS, it has been purchasing PCs with Windows 7 preinstalled since 2007, and then mass-installing Windows XP over it. Which means that they are sitting on a stockpile of unused Windows 7 licences. Of course they are going to use those, rather than buying new Windows 8 licences.

Begs the question of why they didn't do this in the first place.
One version of windows with the modern UI for mobile devices, and one without it for non-mobile devices. That way Windows could go on a diet and not be full of fat.

Basically because Office for Metro was not ready (in fact, Metro was not ready), and Windows RT needed Office as a USP to go up against the iPad and Chromebook. Then they decided that Windows 8 for PCs should also have Metro to accommodate hybrid and multi-role devices.

I think that if they were going to include it, they should have just left the Windows RT desktop open, and left the Start Menu as an option on the x86 version. But this is Microsoft. Asinine decisions by committee (slogan: "None of us are as dumb as all of us combined").

    Greetings!
Not only the StartMenu, the ability to run Metro apps inside windows too.
That solves the two most obvious flaws of W8. Microsoft only took ~3 years to correct them. :hehe:
