Peripherals Mouse & Keyboard no longer working in Windows 8.1

Weird things are happening to my rig today:



Things were working fine this morning, then when the machine was rebooted earlier the cursor failed to appear, and the keyboard was unresponsive. As you can see from the image above, device manager is missing the mouse/keyboard groups, and the system can see no hardware installed. However, the HID and USB input devices are detected (and dynamically disappear when the mouse/kb are detached and reattached). The printers and devices box can also see them and the properties in there.

Things I've tried:

• Booting into UEFI, where both devices function perfectly.
• Removing devices from Printers and devices, then rebooting and allowing them to reinstall.
• Removing all components from device manager under the Human Iput Devices, rebooting to allow reinstall. Nope.
• Plugging in an alternative keyboard, it's detected, but there's no response.
• Unplugging all other USB devices and trying each device individually.
• Trying alternative USB ports, they are detected in each case but give no input.

I'm controlling the rig from Teamviewer at the moment with no issue. All other USB devices are working as normal. No updated were installed or changes made prior to the devices ceasing to function. AV scans show nothing untoward.

Unplug the mouse and keyboard and any other USB peripheral from the system.

In Device Manager, click on View > Show Hidden Devices.
Now, remove all items under "Human Interface Devices", and also under "Keyboards", "Mice and other pointing devices", and "Universal Serial Bus Controller" (this will also remove your USB 3.0 drivers, something to keep in mind)

If it asks to restart don't, and continue.
Once, done, restart, install back th USB 3.0 driverse, restart again, and now plug your mouse and try.

You were almost there. This should work.

 

Sadly, although I followed your advice to the letter I've still got the same issue

Both devices installed correctly etc, but there is no cursor and no response from the keyboard. Really confusing and very irritating.

Both devices are definitely receiving power, as both keyboard (Ducky Shine 3) and mouse (Logitech G500) are lit up as normal...

 

Can you turn of the system, plug you mouse only, and turn it on.
I want to see if it's a problem with the fuse of the USB plugs.

 

Done, still nothing. The DPI lighting on the mouse is lit so it's definitely receiving power.

The fact that the devices work at UEFI level implies that this is definitely a Windows issue.

When I get home this evening I'll bung a spare HDD in there and stick a test install of 8.1 on there.

 

There was a piece of malware floating about that disabled mouse and keyboard, a year or two ago, but I haven't heard of it recently.

It might not appear on a standard AV scan - trying booting into safe mode and running Malwarebytes Chameleon or something similar.

 

You could try running the Microsoft Fix it.
Or maybe it could be this KB article...Connected USB device is not detected in Windows

 

The weird thing is that the PC was disconnected from the internet during the time that the issue occurred.

Also Windows can detect the mouse and keyboard, it just won't assign them as a mouse and keyboard in device manager. I'd expect there to be sub groups for "mice and pointing devices" and "keyboards" but they are not there.

 

I'm sure you have already done this, but what happens when you plug in other mouses/keyboarders?

 

Exactly the same thing, it detects that they are there, but doesn't allocate them as mice and keyboards

Have you tried booting from a LiveCD or something like that (or even just the Winders install media)?

 

Just out of curiosity but does the registry list the ClassGuid for keyboards ?

Try running a system file check

 

Do you know, in all my years of doing IT support, sfc /scannow has never fixed a single thing for me. But I still advise people do it - weird aye.

Out of interest, how were you able to get into Computer Management with no mouse or keyboard?

 

SFC is largely useless in 8.1. Far better off running

dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
Dism /online /cleanup-image /checkhealth

One after the other will tell if you there's anything wrong with the system files and if it's repairable.

If the above applies then insert 8.1 disc (ideally, it can work without) and run

Code:

dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth /source:d:\sources\sxs /limitaccess

If it errors try without the last two parameters.

Edit: I have used SFC numerous times and it actually has fixed stuff. I find dism better for 8 onwards though.
