Has anyone heard of taking out an i-pod scroll wheel touch thing and using in another application (one totally unrelated to an ipod). i just thought it would be cool to use one as a scroll/button for something. no ideas yet, just curious if its even possible
no one has ever heard of this? well if thats the case, does anyone wanna donate a broken ipod to me to see if i can't hack it up?
jakenbake, you may not have had a reply due to the unusual time of your first post. 4.30AM isn't the busiest time on these forums.
I dont see why you couldnt get it to work, but it may take alot of time and effort. What were you thinking of using it for?
Odds are, because of an I-pods size, that it's too small for hand soldering. It's probably all on one pcb.
no idea, just thought it would be cool... ideas are appreciated though, maybe as a remote control of some sort... i'm sure if that was the case, it runs to some sort of connector that i could buy and fan out
i have a couple old broken ipod bits sitting around looking sorry for themselves so i may be of help to you either in posting pics of it so you can see what you would be trying to work with or possibly sending you one which may be unlikely
ya, if you get bored, take it apart and take some pictures. that would be great. preferably some up-close shots of the wheel (obviously), and i'm assuming it connects to a board, so if you could snap some photos of the board that it connects to and the connector, that would be sweet. thanks!
well the first part is easy since once it broke i took it apart like straight away so taking pics will be no problem and will try and get them up later tonight.
here are the pics for you ipod and a scroll wheel from another ipod just the scroll wheel the connetor for the scroll wheel (still plugged in) hope these pics will help atall but my cam aint that good at takin close ups of small things
awesome. couple of questions: 1. how many pins is that connector? 2. can you give me the markings on top of the two black IC's on the wheel and the # of the pins on each? (the two big ones in the last picture on the right) btw, try the 'macro' setting on your camera to take better close ups thanks again
which two ics are you wanting the info for? on the connector to the main pcb it has 8 pins and is it the big ic and the other connector you want the info for? i was using the macro mode on the camera but it was mainly due to bit of shaking in my hand and i wanted to get as close as possible for detail but was a bit to close here is a better version of the last pic which i have removed now
Well damn, don't I look silly now. They not only made it seperate, they give you a nice ribbon cable to connect to...
whoops, i thought that connector was an IC . anyway, i've included the picture below with the info that I am curious about. I can't really tell where the wheel ribbon cable plugs into... is it at the bottom left of the ipod in the first picture, or somewhere else? also, what was in the center of the wheel... in the second picture i see what looks like 2 wires running to something. finally, i guess i only need the markings for the single, big IC (kinda hard to make out in the picture). thanks again! btw, anyone have any ideas how i could use this? i was thinking as a volume or something, really anything with a rotating dial. any ideas would be sweet.
the ribbon connector is connected from the bottom left of the ipod shown in the 3rd pic and goes into the second connector in the actual scroll wheel and then extends on to a button for the centre button. i hope that is clear enough as i am not able to get a pic just now. the markings on the ic are: synoptics ( i think) T1005 0406 CM2761ET-20 if you are wanting a rotating dial it may just be easier to get something like the griffin powermate although i dont no where you can get it in the US http://www.kustompcs.co.uk/acatalog/info_5445.html
yep, it makes sense. thanks dude, i really appreciate all your help. EDIT: is it synAptics possibly, with an 'a'? pshhhhh, wheres the fun in that?
