    Hi people

I'm looking to replace my laptop (see sig) that just died. I'd like something with a display smaller than 12.1" and costs less than £500. I refuse to buy anything from Acer or PC World though. Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Asus EEEPC - the new versions are more fancy if the current-generation are too slow/small-screened for you. Problem is I can't remember when they're out. Could be ages yet. :)

[edit]BiT's own news report about it, with a comparison between old & new features... :thumb:

Yeah, I'd like an eeePC, but I need a laptop now. If I bought a 701, it'd take ages to be delivered, and by then the 900 series would only be out a couple of months later and I'd feel like I'd missed out. :( "summer" is a long time away in computer terms. Thanks for the suggestion though!

Hmm... I can't really recommend anything else tbh, I don't know enough about miniature laptops to tell you anything but the eee is going down a storm and the new ones won't be that long coming... Maybe an interim laptop until the new eee's?

i'm pretty sure that for less than [squiggle]500 your only options are an eee, or jump up to a 14" screen. unless you want to buy used.

If you want an EEE quick, try Toys R Us of all places. They normally have them in.

I’d recommend a Samsung Q45, it’s been on PC Pro A list for ages (ultra portable). There also pretty dam cheap for the features packed into it - around the £500 mark. Less if you buy a new one off eBay.

the only 12.1" i found for that price was at pcworld hence why i didn't buy it. scan do have this MSI PR210 at £543 and its quite often on their deal of the day offer, of course it is pink.

Has anyone found a Samsung Q45 for £500, I only ever seem to find place with them in stock selling at £600 and up

How about the Cloudbook? Comes out at the end of the month and will be pretty good imo.

edit: Newegg has them for 399$

Up untill a few weeks ago, was of the same opinion of PCWorld... However my laptop died and i came across this whilst wandering around the local PC world buying a printer cartridge
    http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/st...m=null&tm=null&sku=603566&category_oid=-27757

i slightly scared the PCWorld drones by refusing all help and googling the model number for reviews on my PDA whilst standing in the store :)
in the end i brought it, upset the PCWorld drones even further by point-blank refusing all extended warranties and extra software before they even asked

I've now had the laptop a few weeks... it's simply one of the best laptops i've used. incredibly silent (fan only kicks in if the two CPU cores hit over 50-60% CPU usage for some time) lightweight and decent battery life. Two things sold it for me: the 1366x768 res 11" screen, and the touchpad that includes 2x scrollbars on the edges (first laptop where i've felt a separate mouse isn't necessary) :)

i'm still quite bemused over the fact i found something decent at PCWorld... i wouldn't reccomend buying anything else there, but this Phillips ultraportable range seem solidly built and decently priced.

checking now, theres a slightly better specced version thats cheaper there now... bugger :p

:wallbash: Should have checked that a bit more carefully. Its still only £530 inc for the base spec one, which isn't too bad

Edit: just found the laptops here. They have a rather cheap 12" one

    Hi people
thank you for all the ideas and apologies for not replying - I've been away for the week.

badders - thanks for that, I went and checked, but they'd sold out. :( They said they were hoping to get some in over the weekend but I wasn't around on Monday. Oh well..

Shadow_101 - yeah, I saw the Q45 on ebuyer and in a couple of shops in london and it looked pretty nice and very good value, but a bit too bulky. I also had a look at an ASUS laptop ebuyer had - F9E which seems nice too, but again, I think I saw one in a shop and it was quite bulky.

antiHero: the cloudbook is sold by Packard Bell in england and it's genuinely hideous. I had a play with one in PC World and I don't think I'd want to pay more than £40 for it and use it as a wireless access point or something.

As for the Dell recommendations from people: none of the Vostros are smaller than 14", sadly, and the XPS1330 is nice, but again, too big. Thanks for pointing them out though.

cyrilthefish, thanks for pointing those out - I saw one in PC World too, and it was quite nice, but once you see what I went for, you'll understand why I didn't get one:

I bought a second hand Dell Latitude D430 off ebay for £460. It's got 1GB of RAM, 80GB hard disk, 1.2GHz/dual core/2MB processor and all the standard stuff like WiFi, bluetooth, SD card reader, 3G cellular modem and it has 30 months of on site warranty and insurance left! I am very pleased :)

Thanks again for all the suggestions

I'd like to HIGHLY reccomend the ASUS eeePC. (pics of mine below)

Can't wait for the 900 series to arrive...who knows what we'll be able to cram into that baby.
