Motors Who drives a diesel?

Alfa Romeo GT Q2, 190bhp (remapped), 42-45mpg, superb car, great for my 40 mile commute and has been outstanding at track days too, embarrassing many a hot petrol. Will hit 50mpg on long motorway stuff.

 

Focus 1.8 TDI - get about 40mpg with normal driving and 55+ on a motorway cruise. The downside to it is, it's a bit of a snorewagon.

 

Ford Fiesta MKVI, 1.4 TDCi

Got 65mpg travelling from Bristol to Betws-y-coed, North Wales on the weekend.

Did the entire journey on under one tank!

peugeot 206 1.4 HDi, steady 65mph motorway driving gets a comfortable 65mpg maybe 70, town driving with efficiency in mind gets a good 45-50.

 

Now that really is a case of too much information.

Anyway, I hope he cleans up afterwards - he may get pulled over for unlawful emissions

I drive a gasoline car. The most efficient car I've driven is a tie between an 1986 Toyota MR-2 (1.6L 4A-GE engine) and 2003 Toyota Corolla (1.8 1ZZ-FE engine w/ VVT-i), both gave me about 6.0-7.5L/100km (~39mpg) on low-octane petrol.

My current car is about 17.0-19.0L/100km (12-14mpg) on premium petrol

Mines black with an AngelTuning engine re-map. Goes like a bomb!! Does 50 to 55MPG on my 22 mile commute to work. About 450 mile on one tank. (about 40 litres)

 

We use a metric system, strictly, but the gallons I quoted are probably US gallons since they were converted by Google.ca for me.

But I'll re-convert them to match the imperial gallon that I think everybody here/Europe is using (1 imperial gallon = 4.55 litres; 1L/100km = 282mi/gal imperial), so....:

car (weight w/ driver, transmission, engine, disp., configuration, output) = metric economy = imperial/European economy
'86 AW11 MR-2 Targa (1120kg, 5MT, 4A-GE, 1.6L, L4, 130ps) = 6.5L/100km = 43mi/gal
'03 ZZE120 Corolla CE (1300kg, 4AT+overdrive, 1ZZ-FE, 1.8L, L4, 135ps) = 6.0L/100km = 47mi/gal
'93 UCF11 LS 400 (1800kg, 4AT+overdrive, 1UZ-FE, 4.0L, V8, 260ps) = 16L/100km = 18mi/gal

Note how a 22-year-old sports coupe can rival the fuel economy of today's econoboxes, diesel or petrol, without using fancy techs such as variable valve timing or higher octanes

It's not as if the standard one is sluggish either! How much did that cost you out of interest? And what is your engine putting out now?

 

Probably because the figures are a dream, in this country the same engines never got near that sort of economy, having had the MR2 I know that for sure.

Also the corolla with autobox doing 47mpg, never, maybe when you are nearly coasting at 55mph on the motorway, best not to believe government figures.

Its true that newer cars aren't always more economical that older ones numerous factors effect that like size, weight and safety kit, cars are getting bigger and heavier, pop that same 22 year old engine in a modern equivalent and it'll do low 20s.

Also worth noting that onboard computers mpg calculations can be well off, mine always tells me I am doing 55 on a tank but brim to brim calculations based on litres and mileage show me doing a lot less.

I get 44.8 average on my daily commute of around 100 miles.

It makes no difference how you drive it, it always gives 44.8. It's slow as well, avoid buying one of these like a vomit covered tramp.
