Displays Which 24" Monitor

After 5 years of abusing my trusty set of LG's L1720P/B's, it's time for an upgrade, and I'm thusly in the market for 24 inchers.

Reading up on reviews and such, it's hard to make a decision because every reviewer is a bit differint. I've been looking for 24" monitor round-ups but none of the monitors on my shortlist are ever compared directly. So now, my friends, I turn to you.

My requirements: not too expensive. I need to buy two, and I want to stay well below €800. This unfortunately means no fancy smancy panel like MVA, but a cheap TN+Film panel. At least 1920x1200. A high brightness is preferred, I've been using 400cd/m^2 for 5 years and I guess if I go lower now I'm going to miss it.

Samsung Syncmaster 2493HM
LG Flatron L246WH
BenQ V2400W

Is anyone extatic about his display? Has anyone compared one of these directly, and has a preference? Is this "Dynamic Contrast" feature crap? Any other recommendations? Thanks!

 

Those are all junk. Get the Nec 2490wuxi. it'll be a bit pricey though.

Otherwise, I have terrible luck with any and all samsung products.
My LG is alright, though dynamic contrast is a TERRIBLE thing.
Benq I actually quite like (but don't like Ace.)
What about the Dell equivelent? I've heard good things on them, but not sure on the 24" model.

So that's a point for the LG246WH, because it doesn't use dynamic contrast, but does have a 2000:1 contrast ratio, which is far higher than even the 2493HM's contrast (1000:1 static, 10000:1 "crapynamic").

Too expensive. One of those would set me back 3/4ths of my entire budget.

 

Tbh dude I'd rather have a single decent monitor rather than 2 crap ones.

Don't forget what a massive jump in screen space you'll be getting compared to one 17" monitor... How about a new 24" and one of your current 17"ers as your 2nd? You could even get a decent 24"er, then a cheap 22" for general crap as a 2nd screen too.

 

If you MUST have 2, have a look at the Samsung SM-245B, however, if you can be satisfied with one (quality) monitor, have a look at the HP LP2475w or BenQ FP241(V)W....

dell do a 23" 1920x1080 (16:9) it might be worth a look as it comes in at under £180, I have no idea how well it performs though.

 

Relix, I've got the BenQ G2400W, which is the less design-oriented version of the V2400W.
It's fantastic - picture quality is top-notch for a TN+film, colours and brightness are a little off out of the factory, but some adjustment soon sorts that out.
It does 1:1 pixel mapping.

For the price, fantastic. Liratheal has two of them, I believe.

 

The Dell 2408WFP is very nice.

I debated to myself whether to go with a lesser monitor, but in the end I knew that I'd regret it, so I splurged. My wallet is still recovering, but I think it was worth it - the connectivity and quality are great.

 

TN is TN. if you're getting crap it may as well be cheap crap, so just get whichever you can find for cheapest. or you could do as i'm doing and get a really nice 24" primary and a crap secondary to stay under budget.

@badders - i've heard the v2400 is not quite as nice as the g2400. i forget what the actual complaints were, but a bunch of people on the NCIX forums were complaining about it.

 

I highly suggest heeding supertoads advice on getting one good primary, and use your current 17" as a second display. That is what I've done with my Nec 2690wuxi, and my LG 22".
Not only will the good LCD most likely last longer, it'll look much better.

Is this an option you're willing to go with? What do you normally do on your computer?

I'm very tempted to get another one of my 2690 so I can finally demote the 22" LG to a network display of sorts, and run dual Necs.

 

I don't know... I quite like my desktop to look awesome and that's not going to happen with two totally differint looking screens (as in aesthetics, not in image quality). 95% of what I do is surfing the web, reading e-mail and coding. 4% is watching movies, 1% is image editing, photograph post-processing, games.

I will probably buy 1 24" at first, and then use it together with a 17" for a while, before buying 2.

Say I'd buy an MVA/PVA/S-IPS, what would you suggest? Not the dell 2408WFP which is €800. Not gonna happen.

 

That's weird, over here you can get a 2408WFP on pre-order for £380 = 490 Euro's, apparently...

Adding my vote for the G2400W's. Very nice monitors, and they're cheap which is a nice bonus.

Not surprising it's more expensive - Dell want £580 for a 2408WFP over here...

According to that list you can get yourself a BenQ FP241WZ for 426 Euro's? (If I'm reading it right, don't speak German) I'd get a pair of those tbh, they're epic monitors.

The 2709 has MASSIVE lag apparantly, most sites/places peg it between 50ms and 75ms
