you could always try downloading ane unzipping smartie again, I did after having this error. Also have device manager open, when you plug you lcd in, then you will be able to double check com port.

What drivers did you install ?

Do you have your lcd on serial or usb ?

Yeah, Maybe a dead screen, I do have one, 16x2, that when connected, shows a row of blocks on line one but it is like smartie cannot find the screen and shows that error

Funny so many people having a problem with the COM port recently, because I kinda got frustrated with COM ports changing and stuff like that. I made a special driver for LCD Smartie that finds the right port by itself. It looks for a device in Windows with a matching VID and PID (vendor and product ID) and binds to that. I made it in particular for the VID and PID of my version of USB2LCD, but it could be easily adapter to look for the Microchip port (VID=04D8, PID=000A). It also produces slightly better error messages when something does go wrong (like the "COM port is in probably in use" instead of just a generic "Cannot connect").

If you want to try and make a DLL display driver for your display, the code can be found at http://www.coderforlife.com/projects/lcd/lcd-smartie-display.zip

It is a Visual C++ Project. You only have to change one line to change which display it looks for. The display must support the Matrix DLL normally.

    Hi,

I have been looking or a solution like this for months, I am very surprised it was available for years!!!

I have a really tiny eadip204b 4x20 display, based on KS0073 controller. I was wondering whether this circuit will be compatible or not, as KS0073 should be hitachi-compatible.

    Thanks.

I have started this project myself. Thaks to everyone that posted.
I have some problems with config bits of PIC18F2550.

I am using winpic software, is anyone able to give me a screenshot of his right settings?
I have used only PIC12F629 until now with doesn't require any settings regarding config bits.
I have read some posts, also loked at required programmer config posted by ch424 at the begining at this thread, can't figure out.
