Hi there. I'm on broadband, my connection is with a DHCP server. I'd like to change my ip address, it's been the same for a while but it never appears to change. A DCHP release and renew doesn't appear to work, what can I do?
If your router can spoof a MAC address (used to be required in the old cable modem days) you could try spoofing a different MAC address. Then reboot cable modem and reboot router. New MAC = new lease.
Cool, I'm with NTL, so I'll then need to register the router again. Used to be 'start.ntl'. That doesn't work, any ideas what it is now? Search is useless, phoning them is like clapping with one hand!
Think I might have trouble with using a 'new router' or mac address, been reading alot of people having trouble with virgin media and using new equipment.
Because I want to move with the times and be like the other cool people with ip addresses that begin with '10.x.x.x'.
It does. My IP address changes with a new mac or 'new router', but NTL or as it is now, Virgin media do have issues, or rather users have issues when new equipment is connected to the Set Top Box. Years ago, I would have simply typed 'start.ntl' and registered the new mac, now things are different. How to get round this, I don't yet know, but I need to find out, as if my router were to fail, I'd need a new one, then be left with not being able to use the internet until I can suss out how to make Virgin Media happy with my new router or 'new mac'.
Hang on, The 10.x.x.x subnet is reserved for private networks - ie you'll never get one from your ISP, the same as 192.168.x.x
+1 bladders. ive only ever seen a 10.x.x.x address on a school network. whats the point of changing your IP. its dynamic will eventually change on its own anyway but not to what you want and even IF jesus was alive and he granted you a 10.x.x.x IP it would change after a while. stop been a tard !
I heard 10.1.x.x addresses are going to be allocated as public facing IPs (behind NAT) due to the dwindling number of free IPv4 addresses left. Also, to register a new MAC, dial 150 from a VM landline. It'll take hours to explain to the Indians what you want to do, though.
Guys guys guys. You don't need to register your MAC anymore. NTL scrapped it years ago, and Telewest sometime after. Turn off your cable modem. Turn off your router. Wait 30 seconds or so. Turn on your cable modem. Turn on your router. Done. Now to talk to you about the other half of your query. You will NEVER get a 10.x.x.x address on your internet side. The nature of internet connectivity precludes this as a possibility. (http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc1918.html - 10.x.x.x is IANA reserved address space and is not publicly routable on the internet therefore it'll never work) You want it on your LAN? You need to edit your router's LAN IP and DHCP pool. Set your custom MAC address to how it was before, because you gain nothing by spoofing it.
