    ...for my wife!

Now I know literally nothing about music/storage and less about iTunes and iTunes server; My wife is technically challenged, and, as as fast as a slug on prozac when it comes to patience with technology...

    So my question:
She wants to be able upload music to/from her IPod without the PC being turned on (her requirements). I have a wireless router and as I understand it, if I bought an NAS Filer similar to WD My Book Live 2TB NAS Drive(http://www.ebuyer.com/product/245542) which has an ITunes server in it - it should be possible to achieve this (both being turned on 24/7.) The Ipod will sit in a docking station and we're only talking music (not video etc.)

Obviously in my naivety I'm missing something - but what ....

I'm sure you guys will tell me... Please!

itunes server from what i can tell does not perform this function

it simply shares your music collection over the network not allowing her ipod to sync wirelessly without her PC been on.

no, ipod/iphone doesn't work with itunes server NAS.

if you buy a Synology NAS, however, Synology have an app on Appstore for streaming music from the NAS's shared music folder. that should allow you to dock and play your whole music library.

works anywhere, i can listen to my whole music collection when there's stable 3G on my iphone 4.

but it does require a bit of setting up with DDNS and port forwarding to achieve it. easy if you follow the NAS onscreen pages.

Ack - this differs from what someone else told me ... she could set up play lists and synch those.

Is that not anlagous to uploading to the IPod?

No its not. To sync an ipod you must have the pc with your music turned on. However you can do the sync over a network if you jailbreak
