Time to start a new Worklog

After finishing a few other mods (customer projects) we now have a bit of time to start a
new Project. After our Weigthed Companion Cube we don´t had to think a long time to make a decision. We´re going to build a full size Sentry Turret (approx. 1,3m tall) with a mini itx /atx system in it.

Beside that we´re going to integrate as much animatronic as possible, so that the Turret will behave like those in the game (without the shooting part :D) As heart of the animatronic system we´re going to use an arduino. The Arduino will be connected to a few sensors which will register movement in the room (pir) or movement of the turret (tilt) so that the turret can react on its enviroment. We also want to integrate a voice for it, but i think we will solve that problem with a simple shield + speaker for the arduino :D

But enough of the words....time for a few pics

We started the building process with a few layers of polystyrene....

on one of that layers we made a quick sketch of the turret so that we could start to cut out the raw shape of the body...

after cutting out a few layers we glued everything together so that we can continue the shaping process....

and after working out the raw shape we could turn the complete thing 90 degrees around to prepare the next side ....

By that logic both you & thechoozen should stop working on a turret mod:

but ofcourse, that would just be silly; we always like to see different people's approaches to the same mod. :thumb:

Of to a good start dude! Definately subbed on this one!
Have you ever tried a hot wire to cut the foam?
This works brilliantly and seals the foam directly also

yeah i tried it a long time ago when i was at school and i also can remember that it work perfectly...but atm we don´t have one....it´s one of those tools we want to build everytime we work with foam.... but up to now we didn´t build one :D

Most electric airsoft/bb guns just use a simple motor system for firing. It should be a relatively minor task to hook the motor to a motor driver like L293d on the arduino. Conceal some in the sides, cheapo guns don't exactly hurt so should be relatively safe as long as they don't hit the eyes, might want to work out a safeguard on that one (manual firing maybe?)

hehehe, i can see the shooting part attract you :D
And yes, we would also like it ....but lets see what the time will bring....

yeah we really need to build one too:thumb:

But now it´s time for an update first:

We already prepared the shape for the next side...so that we directly could start to cut it out...

as next step we glued 2 layers of foam for each side together so that we could start shaping the sidepanels...

then we cutted the main body of the turret into 2 pieces so that we could add a thin layer of mdf in the middle of both parts
    [IMG]

after that we continued the work on the outer shape of the side panels....(not finished)

HA! Great work so far, foam rocks!

Subscribed to this batch of awesomeness.

One question; Is the mod going to be made out of the foam, or are you going to use that as a form to lay fiberglass on/
