My current monitor connection is via a VGA cable and would like to add another monitor ( vga socket). My motherboard has has an extra hdmi and DVI slot and no graphics card. Please advise of a reliable connection mode. 1. Is there anythng like a Hdmi to vga cable 2. or DVI to vga cable 3 Would i need to buy a graphics card Thanks
1. Is there anythng like a Hdmi to vga cable - nope - won't work 2. or DVI to vga cable - Yes you can get an adaptor 3 Would i need to buy a graphics card - what is your motherboard and CPU?
Forgot to mention. It is a dvi-d slot and not a normal dvi - will the above recommendation still work
DVI->D-SUB adapters takes the DVI-A signals and convert them from DVI connector to D-SUB connector without any modifications. DVI-D doesn't have DVI-A connected, so you cannot use that adapter. You need DVI-A or DVI-I (which is DVI-A + DVI-D) for DVI->D-SUB adapters. In other words : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/65/DVI_pinout.svg DVI->D-SUB adapter needs the red pins, but DVI-D has only the non-red pins connected - take a look : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fb/DVI_Connector_Types.svg @OP: What is the reason for not buying a LCD with DVI/HDMI port ? It's not like there is insane price difference between the lowend D-SUB only and lowend D-SUB+DVI displays.
Thanks for breakdown. No particular reason , i was only trying to make use of the spare vga port lcd monitor i have at home and i thought i could somehow convert the dvi-d signal to vga signal
You can, but not with those cheap adapters. The adapter for HDMI/DVI-D to VGA(D-SUB) would need electronics in it (=double to three digit price range).
