Take them to a jeweller, and ask for them to be ultrasonically cleaned. Or buy a real* ultrasonic cleaner yourself.

    *not real, real.

Remove all the dirt. If you're DIY then use just distilled water, the micro bubbles lift the dirt out from the texture. If you're taking it to a jeweller, then most of the chemicals they could have in it are aluminium safe (but check with them) a lot of car restoration places have ultrasonic baths too, but I don't know what sort of chemicals they use.

Interesting... Do you have one? :D

It might not be dirt, it looks more like the aluminium has reacted with the grease from my skin.

    I don't, I probably should, but I don't.

Done a little reading up on aluminium (it not really being a metal I work in I don't know a great deal about it) and non anodised aluminium can - apparently - be etched by the oils and acids present on our fingers.

Your picture doesn't look like etching... probably just needs a good clean, one product and here we have fluids for cleaning aluminium in ultrasonic baths...

Thank you :) That Quickleen stuff looks like something that you would see on a shopping channel! At 17 GBP per 500g it is expensive but then I guess that these caps need the love!

Would you give that stuff a go?

500g should do you forever! Hadn't noticed it was that much.

I would always start gentle and work up, have you tried ye-oldie' vinegar and toothbrush trick? Or if you don't like the smell of vinegar, you can always use lemons, leaves your keyboard smelling fresh rather than an old chip-shop...

I hadn't thought of that! I will try that out tomorrow night and if it doesn't work then I will buy some of that stuff.

I am willing to sacrifice one cap so might as well try a few things!

This is the way Portal key caps are meant to be used. Especially at work!
