    Hi All,
I'm in need of a little advice and/or recommendations. My son and I have been doing a lot of 'building' with his Duplo and Megablocks but it's clear he is outgrowing both. I want to get him started on LEGO by buying some big creative brick sets (boxes of bricks and parts instead of models) and a few baseboards.
Back in the 80s I used to own some light bricks which plugged into a long handset filled with batteries:

Is there anything similar available now?
We'd probably use them to light up houses and streets.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can recommend anything!

I actually have one of those battery boxes.

The new versions are like this.

Not all that expensive on eBay.

Plus Lego also sell lights as well.

Yes, look up the power functions sets. They have a lot of electronics built into lego bricks, lights, motors and other things of the like.

Very jelly of OP, I can't wait to do more serious builds and playtimes :D

I don't really know anyone has to justify waiting till their kids are older/born. If you want to build Lego just do it. Don't be ashamed :)

I was building long before my boy was born and now he's older we can both enjoy building together

Was going to say Im sat here in the office I have a Bobcat style excavator, mini crane an helicopter on my desk. Not to mention three mini starwars sets and about 20 minifigures. I have no children an there are none at work!

Never to old to have Lego/Technic

Jealous and proud of you guys. I'm an engineer because Dad was a mechanic (and also a brilliant a jack of all trades) and had me wrenching on cars and taking things apart to see how they worked when I was still biting ankles. I owe him more than I could ever put into words, and can't wait to have a son or daughter of my own that I can teach and enjoy this sort of activity with!

There are also Lego compatible bricks which light up (think I saw them in Toys R Us last time I went). I'll see if I can find a link when I get home from work.

Admit it, you're the one who throws the bricks around when he won't let you play...;):D:lol:

Thank you to @CrapBag @Cei and @Blademrk for introducing me to some very cool kit. All bookmarked. Will go for the official lego stuff first but when he's a little older the Brickstuff looks VERY hackable (just not as robust).

Wow! I'd completely forgotten about the motor; I had one of those. That's a trip down memory lane. If I wasn't working on a rocketry project I'd be getting some EV3 kit:

I use Brickstuff myself and find it pretty excellent. The cables are thin enough to be hidden easily, but you get plenty of light off the pico LEDs.
