Question. Are the founders edition coolers on the 1070 that bad? I mean the t'internet seems to say they're terrible. Reason I ask, Zotac 1070 founders, 5 year warranty, single 8pin.

I heard the opposite - where are you hearing that they are bad?

If you want to overclock you have to accept that you will need the fan at 80% or so.

As for materials? they're not bad at all. Most of the cooler is metal and they're very nicely put together. The fan is probably the same Delta or similar type they've used for years.

Bang on the RRP. It is the 8gb version.

Seems like it's far more impressive across the pond than here, considering the 8GB card is cheaper than their 970s whereas here it's not.

    Perf/Watt seems rather, well, bad.

Edit: and they still haven't sorted out multi-monitor and blu-ray power usage.

performance per watt isnt high among peoples requirements usually.

the key benchmark is bang per buck

I agree, but considering they were banging on about amazing PPW, it really isn't.

Yea the 4GB version seems to be decently priced, they unfortunately lowered the vram speed for it.

As a very budget minded gamer with fairly limited expectations and requirements, the Overclockers email that popped into my inbox this morning with the 4GB 480 for under £180 and a freesync monitor for under £100 was appealing.

    EDIT:
Anyone tested/compared the 4GB to see what real world affect this actually has?

anyone seen a review between the 4GB and 8GB ?

the £40 difference in price is rather appealing if the performance difference is minimal at 1080p

Can't see any reviews of the 4GB card currently, seams AMD have sent out the 8GB to everyone.

Wouldn't you? Always put the best card out to review, try and brush the more problematic/slower one under the carpet.

the 4GB card could be far better priced as OC has them for £176 (XFX)

Theres a few rumours floating about that the 4gb boards on sale currently come with the full 8gb installed so possible bios hack in the future to enable it all.

"Another oddity – and one that may make enthusiast a bit more cheery – is that AMD only built a single reference design card for this release to cover both the 4GB and 8GB varieties. That means that the cards that go on sale today listed at 4GB models will actually have 8GB of memory on them! With half of the DRAM partially disabled, it seems likely that someone soon will find a way to share a VBIOS to enable the additional VRAM. In fact, AMD provided me with a 4GB and an 8GB VBIOS for testing purpose. It’s a cost saving measure on AMD’s part – this way they only have to validate and build a single PCB." PCPER

Edit: and true to form ocuk whack another tenner on the price

I doubt the 4GB card will physically have 8GB installed. Yes the PCB will likely be the same, but I imagine that 4 of the 8 VRAM solder points will be empty.

Happy if I'm proven wrong though :D

Anyone want to guess or has a reason why the 970 performs neck and neck in ashes but 20% behind in Hitman. Considering Ashes uses all dx12 features id expect the gap to be higher there than in Hitman

    Sure it's not 3.5GB instead of 4? :p

    I'd guess the 8GB card will have 8 x 1Gb chips, and the 4GB will have 8 x 512Mb chips.

Who knows mate, it could be a little bonus. Highly possible the board and bios flashes are just for review samples but it wouldn't be the first time an AMD/ATI product was easily modded because it was gimped for the market, though in this case, it does seem excessive to leave 8gb sitting there when it's an easily configurable component.

Yeah that makes no sense. Switching 512MB in for 1GB chips is easy and allows the same PCB. Why would you throw away money by building the same card and selling it for less?
