Looking for a new GPU and I've spotted a few go up for sale today.

Basically I want something under £200 ideally that will play most games at 2560*1440, without max settings. I don't need everything maxed out and don't play lots of games (despite my Steam library being stupidly large - damn you Steam sales and Humble Bundles).

So I just spotted a Sapphire RX 470 for £150 at Scan. As an 8GB 480 for £210.
Would the 470 suffice for my needs? For reference I'm currently running a GTX 660.

    Any other suggestions?

A quick question before I ponder this more (and maybe will let others think about it): how long do you intend to keep the card?

The 8gb RX480 or the 6GB GTX1060 would get my vote. The extra VRAM over the respective 4/3gb models should provide a little buffer for the future but the raw performance over the RX470 (certainly at 1440P) would be the decider for me.

I'll see what pops up on sale today elsewhere. Problem with the 6GB 1060 is that it's £90 more expensive than the 470 that is on sale.

I would get the 480, it is cheaper than the 1060 (And the two cards perform very similarly, occasionally trading blows) and a decent step up from the 470. The 480 is likely to age the best of the three due to its higher VRAM, AMD cards also tend to age better when compared with Nvidia due to driver and software optimisations that unlike Nvidia, are not completed on release and what you tend to see is a hamstrung card on release that improves comparatively over time.

^ Sounds good. Snap it up before it sells out or stops being on sale!

When I was thinking of buying a 480 I was considering the Nitro series, they look great and have decent factory overclocks. I would note that the 480's are supposed to be quite noisy if that kind of thing bothers you, though not had one myself to test. The Sapphire versions are meant to ramp up speed in a more natural way so that you do not notice sudden changes in sound which tend to bother people more than louder noises. How that plays out in practice versus marketing fluff I am not sure.

The 470 is gone now so ordered the 480.

If you went for the 8GB Nitro on special @ £209ish - that's a great buy.
I like the idea of the RGB led logo being able to change colour with GPU temperature

You did very well for your cash. Great card all round. Little warm, but worth it for the looks IMO.

The only other 480 I would consider is the Devil, and it was only reduced to £230 so not a great deal.

I'll have to do some benchmarking against my 660.

Great, enjoy the horsepower! Would be interested to see, I'm still rocking a GTX 660.
