    Well, exactly. That's why AMD needs Zen - and, to a lesser extent, Vega - to succeed, 'cos it's running out of stuff to hock. If Zen flops, AMD'll spin out The Artist Formerly Known as ATi, you mark my words.

    But couldn't that be a blessing in disguise for us, the customers? Possibly making AMD stronger by a) injecting money into the company and b) letting them focus on one product (CPU) instead of spreading their resources thinly across CPU and GPU development? And thus leading to a more balanced and stable market overall?

    Yeah, I know. Quite a lot of question marks in that there paragraph.

    That would be true, if you assume that both AMD and Neo-ATi survive the process. Sadly, if AMD needs to spin out its graphics arm into Neo-ATi in order to keep the lights on then that means Ryzen and Vega have failed - and as soon as AMD burns through the money it raised from the sale of Neo-ATi it's time to call in the receivers 'cos it'll have nowt left of any value to flog.

    Result: AMD certainly dies, Intel gets broken up, Neo-ATi probably dies, Nvidia gets broken up, the consumer can expect to see a massive drop in R&D spending, product stagnation, and an increase in product cost.

    Don't we have that already? At least partially there is no or very little progress between hardware generations with a regular (slight) increase in prices.

    Slightly off-topic but I would love to see Intel simplify their product line-up by having a single socket for consumers and another for servers. And, maybe, having less chipsets for each socket. I mean, do you really need 10 different chipsets for 1151? A little bit of diversity is good, but make it simpler for customers to find the right combination for their budget and requirements. This does not apply to Intel alone, by the way.

    Doesn't Ryzen prove that's not the case? You're looking at a massive uplift over the previous generation and a whopping drop in prices when compared to Intel's equivalent chips. As for Intel itself, it depends on whether you believe the company is deliberately coasting 'cos AMD hasn't been offering serious competition or whether it's just running into some really hard walls - like the delay to its 10nm node which caused the company to abandon Tick-Tock altogether.

    It'll be interesting to see what happens now Ryzen's out: if Intel's generational leaps suddenly get bigger, then it was probably coasting; if not, then it's just that we're reaching diminishing returns in how much more you can improve the x86 instruction set and silicon semiconductors - which means the next big breakthrough will be a move to a different instruction set or a different semiconductor (or both.)

    AMD have suggested the same 5-15% gains for Zen2 in a recent article. Which is the same Intel has been given us. We are probably approaching the limits of the current instruction sets.

    More threaded applications is what AMD keeps betting the house on.

    Then again who really knows, look at the gains in the last 5 years alone.

    Look at nvidia generational improvents 980 vs 1080 it's nearly a 100% faster. Gpus will show the biggest outright performance gains over cpus. Is a feeling.

    AMD needs to convince the masses Ryzen is worth buying. Most just want Intel to reduced prices and still buy Intel which does not help AMD.
