It would have far outweighed the mess from the nukes, archives and records give us some idea of what both Japan and America expected the death toll to be, Japan had already enacted laws to enlist all males aged 15- 60 and all females aged 17-40 into a huge national militia so they could defend the expected landing site at Okinawa from American troops, this article from the foreign policy research institute give a good idea of what both sides were expecting the outcome to be.

Bit late to this thread but putting aside whether the bombs should have been dropped or not it was what the Americans did afterwards that was so appalling. They pretty much stopped all aid to the region so that they could take readings, measure physical damage to survivors and other 'scientific' research for quite some time.
US officials controlled information about radiation from the atomic bombs dropped over Japan by censoring newspapers, by silencing outspoken individuals, by limiting circulation of the earliest official medical reports, by fomenting deliberately reassuring publicity campaigns, and by outright lies and denial.

Sounds very similar to what the Soviets did at The Polygon. Perhaps we are not all so different after all...

I wonder how many world wars we would have had after ww2 I'd it wasn't for the nuclear detergent.

It's a thin line for sure, no country really wants nuclear war as it serves no one, it's only idiots like Kim jung un that think they can end the rest of the world with no consequences.

Yes, who knows how quickly the fascists and commies would have spread across the globe if it wasn't for our atomic whites! :p:

The fear of Nuclear weapons is akin to the fear of aerial bombing in London in the 1930`s (paraphrased from AJP Taylor, The origins of the Second World War)
