It's just to avoid any potential complications with it trying to boot old settings. It shouldn't, as it can detect a new CPU, but you never know.
Just so any previous settings don’t carry over when you have installed a new cpu and cause problems. it’s always best to have a fresh bios.
I’d say it’s worth it for the extra multiplier at that price, gets a bit too “expensive” for the 5670 for no real advantage. Pretty sure you’re safe up to 1.35v on the qpi/vtt just don’t go over that and yeah you don’t have to run the uncore at 2x ram speed, I’ve settled at ~1.875x which seems to work well.
Thanks all. BIOS updated and once I get the new to me 5650 and get back home I'll pop out the CMOS battery for a minute and then install and pray
just a tip, with all my dim slots full and my x5650 overclocked to 4Ghz i had to drop the RAM speed from 1600mhz to 1400mhz, but could tighten up the timings quiet a bit as a comprise. You have a much better x58 motherboard than me so you might be fine.
Otis, I have the same board as you so could I please trouble you for your other OC settings, to see if I can push my new to me x5650 to or near 4Ghz as well? I'm running a Corsair AIO (H50) I think so hopefully heat won't be a problem at that speed.
There is much more to it than that. Have you clocked a hex xeon on x58? I'll photo my setting and post them soon.
The only other settings you mess with is uncore that must be at least 1.5x your ram speed, qpi voltage that I suggest you don’t go over 1.25v, turn off all power saving features, setup your ram to rated speed and latency, set appropriate level for llc. But tbh I agree with Tmdd that 20x200 with only a vcore change will net a quick 4ghz. It’s never failed me on x58, Xeon or not
I wouldn't of guessed The 920 is very very different to the x5650, I came from the same 920 to this and I had to learn a lot more to get it to clock well. You likely had a higher end motherboard too. There are power currant limitations on the P6T SE to keep in mind.
i now seem to be hapily running at 4Ghz (when needed). Just need to find enough suitably demanding multi-core & thread tasks Even more gutted now that i missed out on a great GTX1070 deal on here! thanks all for your help & i hope all goes well for you Lassar.
