Other PC Specialist ad banned

    Eh. I can get behind banning it.

    Kind of a dick move to exclude one of the largest gender groups because "only" 12.5% of their customer base is women.

    Wouldn't have been hard to have a woman in there.

    Totally joking though, I saw one once.
    You'd think they'd have put one in just to make sure they don't get in trouble.

    We have a programming team at work and 2 of the best are women, 1 is 2nd in charge

    Think things are getting silly these days. Not everything has to include all thirty six genders in it's advert !

    I think it's ridiculous to have been banned. It should be their choice to advertise to whichever customer base they deem likely to profit from.

    That's the equivalent of banning a ladies hosiery advert for not showing a man wearing them and excluding a small percentage of blokes who purchase them for their own pleasure...

    The world's gone mad. Get me off!

    I'm sorry but that is ridiculous - so is every advert on the television that only has men or women in now going to be banned? The other thing I can't believe is that it's been banned after having only 8 complaints. Surely that seems a tad small for the ASA to even take a look at it, let alone ban it

    So this ad is unacceptable because some think it portrays gender stereotypes but. it's OK for ads aimed at women to portray men as muscle-bound buffoons?

    BTW, I'm a fat buffoon...

    They've banned ads before, after a lot less than 8 complaints.

    Gender is a complex topic, but in the very short window of time an advert runs for you kind of have to take things at face value. There's not time for each person to introduce themselves and clarify their chosen gender.

    To me, this advert didn't imply that only men are interested in tech.

    On the other hand, recently I was reading some of that recent JK Rowling tweet thing and I didn't understand a particular sticking point of a few transgender people that were commenting on it - Though, today I read something that made me realise why they were taking offense to what, to me, seemed like an innocuous comment.

    So possibly, if I was a woman interested in tech, I'd feel differently about this advert.

    As for the talk of adverts aimed at women featuring objectively fit/handsome men, well. I think women have probably had more than their fair share of mens products being advertised in exactly that way. Anyone remember Lynx adverts? I do. Largely because I can't forget the stench that went along with the product.

    In my ideal world adverts would be a grey background with the product on a pedestal and a list of things it does. No humans, or animals, and no patronising ********, just the product and what it does.

    Although I stand by my original post.

    How hard would it have been to include a woman.

    I mean.. From a purely math perspective, they could have included 0.39 of a woman with 2.61 men to appease the ~13% of their customers.

    I mean.. It's really not. It's just that there is a lot more sexism fired in womens directions than there is in mens directions.

    Not that it's tit for tat here, it shouldn't exist either direction, but the current climate of change with regards to sexism is heavily favouring sexism against women because there's a hell of a lot more of it.

    Oh I don't mean the amount of sexism and who is directing it at who. I mean how much sexism against men do you see on TV or media versus women?
    I'm always reading/watching something about how this guy was sexist or that male group said this or that. But I've never seen a case of a women's group or individual being called out for sexism against men.

    Its absolute BS. The amount of gender neutral products that are marketed exclusively by women but used by all genders on a daily basis is ridiculous but you don't see men raising complaints about it.

    Shampoo and conditioners, biotic yoghurts, tempur matresses, toothpastes - all mainly advertised with women. The list goes on, believe me!

    I'd agree that sexism towards men is covered less frequently, but I'd also argue that it happens so much less frequently that it's probably proportionally represented.

    The most sexist-against-men thing I can think of is the whole child care industry, but not owning a child, or knowing anyone in childcare, I can't really say I know much about it.

    Being as this world is less than ideal, I'm happy to settle for 'bring the amount of sexism against women down to the same level as it is against men, and then work both out at the same time'. Which seems to be the case at the moment.

    And man.. I don't watch much TV, I can't stand adverts, but I don't remember that. I remember a lot of feminine products being advertised, but I also remember a lot of male-aimed products being advertised too.. Hell, the Gilette Mach 7 Power eight-blade Fighter Jet Razor adverts alone are enough to be insufferable. Although I don't think I'll ever get that godforsaken Venus razor advert out of my head. I think it's more that there aren't that many mens product ranges compared to womens.

    Although I also don't recall an advert ever stopping me buying a herbal essences shampoo at any juncture.

    Edit: Also, I think a lot of the neutral products, toothpaste for example, are advertised to women because sexism places the burden of running the household onto women. I'm not meaning to imply that every one of us has a household that is run by women, but. I was pointed at this; https://english.emmaclit.com/2017/05/20/you-shouldve-asked/ recently, and it made me think about it a lot more than I ever had before. Because I just never thought about it. So yeah. That toothpaste might be advertised to women, but that's probably because it's far more common for women to be expected to buy that stuff for the household.

    Exactly. People just need to get over themselves. I personally buy L'Oreal shampoo because it doesn't give me a dry scalp. Should I stop buying it because I've never seen a man in the advert? Because I feel less empowered as a male thanks to Cheryl Cole (or whatever her name is this week) being worth it? Beyond ridiculous.

    I agree it's sexist.

    I read every article the girl in cpc wrote and she's been subject to some pretty horrific hate online for being female.

    I also don't like how there are scantly clad women around computers. Like being exploited because we're all desperate nerds apparently. That needs to stop too.

    I am definitely worth it :hehe:

    ... but going by the same guidelines that the ASA used to ban the PC ad, then I'm obviously not worth it as they don't use males to advertise. Can't have it both ways, the precious little buggers.

    I'll have to read those as those crappy ads for Pink Casino seem to get through ok (my good lady cringes every time they come on).

    Even on their website the first word is 'Ladies!' and last time i checked men gamble too.

    But yeah, it was probably daft of PC Specialist to omit a good % of their buyer demographic, just from a sales point of view if nothing else.
