http://www.glumbert.com/media/asteroidsim Pretty cool little video. I wonder if it will be playing Pink Floyd when it comes too
well lets see just by some google and wiki work lets see all the giant craters we know of on the planet, no telling if theres some buried under the ocean or not. Antarctica http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/060601_big_crater.html Ngorongoro http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ngorongoro_Crater Chicxulub crater http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicxulub_Crater Mistastin crater http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mistastin_crater Manicouagan Reservoir http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manicouagan_Reservoir Clear Waters Lakes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clearwater_Lakes Kara-kul http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara-Kul_crater and for the second largest and the largest, it would be Sudbury Basin http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudbury_Basin and Vredefort http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vredefort_crater and possibly the largest but unverified as of yet was the first post of wilkes land above several of these are possible extinction level events, either due to the size of the impact or due to igniting earths atmosphere plus theres a couple dozen more of more average size
Not to mention all the micrometerites and smaller rocks that more or less constantly pepper the Earth. Large impacts are thankfully rare, but they do happen. The most recent is, at least to my knowledge, the Tunguska event in 1908 (which was most likely a comet).
That large ripple looks a bit like coke. I loved the crust being peeled off, that looks like if it wasn't happening to people and you could somehow watch it would be a site to behold. In that situation imagine being on the international space station, or in a space shuttle at the time, then seeing that go down.
you'd have to be out at a lagrange point or on the moon to see that safely, a shuttle and the space station are too close...... it was ejecting crap over 700km out into space into orbit lol, and I'm sure quite a bit of that broke orbit
Doesn't matter though, you'd still be dead. If the planet's dead, where is there to return to anyway? That'd be the best/worst seat in the house tbh.
People worry about silly things like house prices, taxes, the credit crunch, human rights, religion, oppression, war, death. Yet the only mark of humanity you can see from space is the Great Wall of China. We are but ants under the wheel of the Galactic Hummer. That said, cool video.
Philosophically, the seeming pointlessness of those worries is precisely what makes them so important to focus on. also I'm pretty sure that great wall of china thing is a myth.
Yeah, exactly - untill we invent cloning and we can make an army of Bruce Willis' to plant nuclear bombs on incoming planetoids... because one Bruce wouldn't be enough.
He did it once! :O Anyone else start thinking of Creme Eggs while watching that? EDIT: And now (3:26 ish) Terry's Chocolate Orange? EDIT2: The best comment by far... podman 1 day ago In the last scene, we see a Greece fire. To put that out, don't throw water on it, smother it.
I liked the effects, but i couldn't help but wonder why a 500km wide lump of rock is completly spherical, and then how it hit the planet, it seemed to just drop to the ground. Still cool though. Sam
