Career advice - always difficult to give advice on this topic but any thoughts you have on my situation I would much appreciate. There seem to be a wide range of technical people on Bit Tech so I hope you can help.

My current experience after school has been 4 years of university, 2 years of an engineering course, then 2 years of a product design course.

I then ran a small business restoring classic car engine parts. I enjoyed the hands on work of restoring car engines, but found there was demand for software developers and the business was not making any money so I closed the business to start a software development job. I did that for 2 years, building a backend business service in Java, and quite enjoyed coding. I was the only developer there, so feel my ability to improve my skills was a bit limited.

I recently moved to being a Project Coordinator, I made the classic mistake of moving job as it was more money but I am not enjoying it. I do not do any coding, just spreadsheets and attending client meetings.

I am unsure what I should do now. I don't like being at the desk all the time, and wonder if I would enjoy a mechanic/fixing things type role, or train to be a plumber/carpenter/electrician. Or whether a good software development role with better support would suit me. Very different ends of the scale.

Are there any computer related roles that might involve a bit of hardware fixing and moving around? I wonder if that would be a good middle ground. Obviously no role ticks all the boxes but definitely looking for a change.

    Thanks for reading

The field of industrial automation is dependent on mechanical electrical and software elements although work is usually undertaken by people who specialise in one of these areas. Typically mechanical guys and electrical guys stick to their own fields within automation. Control engineering tends to take care of the software element. The software is used to make hardware move and links the mechanical and electrical systems together into a useful piece of factory equipment. The controls element is a bit more cross discipline
