Networks good (and free) packet sniffer

    im looking for a good packetsniffer (freeware) that i can use to fool arround with. does anyone have a prefered sniffer or know of a good one?

    Actually im looking for something to moitor my dialup connection. PPP/TCP-IP not wireless

    powerfull and fairly easy to use. Linux and windows flavors

    not so sure about the dialup monitroing but it wouldnt supprise me

    ^^ keeps throwing an unable to open raw socket error

    BTW whats a war socket?

    do you mean Raw not war? I am guessing so. Baisicly, its a socket that isn't associated with UDP or TCP, its just a "raw" ip socket.

    Also, I am going to put another vote in for Ethereal. Its basicly the BEST you can get esspecially since its Opensource. I use it all the time myself to help me diagnose problems on my little home network.

    netstumbler is a wireless network discovery tool. not a packet sniffer. but it is good at what it does.

    but i never got etherial to work but PMon is working now. thanks all :cooldude:
