    Im in the market for a new ssd for my Asus x99-S rig. Bios update shows NVM support added and my m.2 says 4x. Is this all i need to get the full benefit of the drive?

    Correct. Win 8.1/10 have native NVMe drivers. Win 7 has had it added via an update.

    Sorry. I share your disappointment too. I've spent a lot of time trying to fix, but we need to make sure we have a permanent, working test system before proceeding. Cup of tea sounds great though, thanks ;)

    It's weird that - in the exact opposite of the situation in the US - the SM951 is about £90 cheaper than the 950 Pro at the moment.

    Limited stock perhaps? From what I can tell it *should* be cheaper, what with the lack of Samsung warranty and support.

    The samsung sm951 256GB is £117 on scan. The 950pro is listed as £170! Very tempted with the sm951. Can you boot from these drives or am i missing something here?

    IIRC provided your bios has been update to support the NVMe drives, then yes...

    Yep, you can, if you're using X99 or Z170. Older chipsets you may have to check. Also for Win7 installation you'd need to point the installer to the NVMe driver, while 8.1 and 10 should detect it without issue.

    Hmm, my Z97 board has been updated to support NVMe... will need to double check it's bootable in that case...

    I am so out of the loop with SSD's.
    there are a few revisions of my board and I cant remember what mine is I have a GA-Z97-HD3, one has the M.2 slot the other doesn't. I will have to look when I get home, but the sound of one of these drives is appealing to me now.

    It seems to me the only common sense way of adding these to a desktop is to use a third party PCIe3 addon card with a decent heatsink to avoid throttling? The sm951 256GB may be significantly cheaper but it only comes with 1 year warranty.

    Presumably adding the AHCI version of the SM951 will result in less throttling if the max speed is restricted.
