News UK government finally legalises CD ripping

Years ago, allowing you to make as many copies for your personal use as you wanted. In return the track is tagged with your user ID so that if you distribute/sell illegal copies, it can be traced back to you. Seems a fair trade-off.

 

At last I can breath a sigh of relief, the stress I have been under for years copying my cd's to my computer knowing that it was illegal has been huge.

 

Noted...

 

It seems the music industry isn't happy to let people copy their own music for use on thier different devices.

As a tax like that already exists in other countries like for example Canada and Switzerland I'm not really surprised they try to get it here as well.

However they could also just cut down on the ridiculous number of middlemen between artists and customers (by properly embracing digital distribution), that way artists could get more without us paying more.

 

Apologise for resurrecting an old thread but I felt that people maybe interested to know that a recent court case has ruled that CD ripping for personal use is once again unlawful.

Oh, well, I shall immediately remove all ripped music from my PC then go and fetch my CDs out of the attic. Honest!

 

Ah the music industry. Will they ever tire of trying to kick water up hill?

 

The act of making the copy used to be illegal, now its not but the owning the original is still a bit vague (not that anyone is likely to come after you)

But say for instance I make a copy of a CD (or copy a song to my iphone or what ever) I own the original CD and store it safely in my house. My house burns down.... I no longer own the original as its been destroyed should I now destroy my copy and buy a replacement CD with the insurance money??

 

I'm not sure if there's a difference between unlawful & illegal but making a copy used to be illegal, then it wasn't, and now its back to being illegal again, I think.

 

I don't think there is a difference between the two from a strict definition point of view; however, I think people tend to use unlawful when it's a civil matter, and illegal when it's criminal.
