News IE 7: Not Just for Windows XP SP 2

Redmond, bless 'em, will kindly be making IE7 available to SP1, XP 64bit & Server 2003 owners as well - contrary to William's previous utterance stating that "It was to orangy for everyone else, and it was just for him and his do... SP2 users".

You're still screwed if you run any other Billcrosoft OS. This from PCWorld:

Internet Explorer 7.0, the next version of Microsoft's Web browser, won't just run on Windows XP with Service Pack 2, but will also be available for Windows Server 2003 with Service Pack 1 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced Internet Explorer 7.0 at the RSA Conference in San Francisco two weeks ago. While scant on details, Gates said the browser would offer security enhancements to protect users against phishing scams and other online attacks. He also said IE 7 would be for users of Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2).

More details on IE 7 are trickling out as Microsoft works on the browser upgrade. Earlier this week, the IE team at Microsoft wrote on its Web log that the browser would be available for "Windows XP SP2 and later," which also includes the forthcoming Windows Server 2003 SP1 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, according to the Web log.

Although I probably won't use IE7 for more than a weeks worth of testing, I'm glad that Microsoft is taking the Firefox competition nicely. It's good to see that the open source world can force stubborn monopolies to improve their products. We select few that know better can keep our systems safe by using alternatives, but for the millions who do nothing more than browse the web and check email, they are sitting ducks. Internet security is a world wide effort, not a competition to see who is better. Let's hope more comes of this.

 

How long do you reckon it will be after release before they have to release a critical update? 1 Day? 2? 3 at best? Doubtless it will be as full of holes and rushed out as every other Msoft product.
