So how many of the guys here cook, clean, wash and iron? I think I do a pretty good job of taking care of household chores. 1. I do all the laundry washing. 2. Wife irons and puts away said washing. 3. I cook around 2 to 3 times a week. We normally have 1 takeaway a week. 4. We share the hoovering and cleaning of floors. Wife mostly cleans the bathroom. 5. I do nearly all the dishes and kitchen cleaning. 6. Wife does all the food shoppping (I have to unload the car though). 7. wife drops the brat at her mums in the morning and I collect after I finish work. 8. I empty bins and insure they are out ready for bin day. 9. Wife looks after the cats and deals with the litter trays. 10. I do all DIY and the work in the garden. EDIT: 11. Wife does most of the finances (a good 90%) 12. I make the sure the vehicles are maintained and taxed etc (insurance and tax paid from joint account). I'm just intrested on how other couples run their home and wether there are any lessons that could be learnt. Perhaps you live like a king or queen with your partner doing it all? Let's see how this thread goes..............
1. I provide the income 2. We share laundry duties. 3. GF walks the dog most of the time I do weekends 4. Share shopping duties (she's rubbish at food planning) 5. Share cooking duties 6. I put the bin out on bin day 7. Cleaning is normally a bit spars lol we both do a little bit but in process of decorating 8. DIY me 9. We don't own an iron lol or many draws for things to go in
This could be interesting! Also interesting to see what the split of work there is between the couples for those posting IMO. I work full-time but flexibly, from home ~3-ish per week on average (some weeks all at home, some I'm fully away all week, but mostly day trips or single nights away). Work is pretty seasonal, some weeks I might be working 70+ hours, others might not do 20 hours of "real" work and just a lot of "filler" work. She she's doing a PhD and working part-time teaching at the university where she's studying. Also flexible and seasonal much like my own schedule. - She cooks large meals a couple times per week, big pots of things or roasts that mostly go in the freezer for us and kiddie - home brew ready meals basically - I do most of the meal prep on the night, whether that's cooking or just re-heating something from her batches - She does perhaps 2/3 of the dishes (most of this is loading/unloading dishwasher though) - She gives the kitchen a mild clean most evenings around the table, where the toddler eats - She does all the laundry duties apart from on a Friday - She does childcare on days she's not working - Pre-bedtime stuff with kiddie is both of us when I'm at home - She does ~70% of nursery runs - Shopping is 90% Ocado, which she does most of, save the occasional small shop for a few bits at the Sainsbury's local, which could be either of us - I do all the DIY (and I'm calling anything that involves a tool DIY, e.g. putting up a picture up to full scale renovation) - Maid service on a Friday covers cleaning kitchen, bathrooms, hoovering, dusting, laundry, change linens etc - Ironing gets collected/delivered when there's enough of it built up - We have a rabbit, does rabbit related chores ~70% of the time - Intermittent cleans and general tidying could be either of us, pretty equally - Bin related chores are 70% me - She's the household accountant
I do most of the cleaning and she does all the cooking, shopping and laundry. It helps that all the heavy stuff is ordered online and she buys fresh veg daily. Back in China we did have a cleaner come in weekly but as students can't afford it in the UK. We also can't afford a huge apartment so we have a lot less to clean.
We originally set up a roughly 50:50 split on all chores but things seem to have slipped somewhat. We divided all jobs up between us as follows: All cooking - Me All clothes washing - Wife Cat litter tray - Wife (I throw up if I try that) Bins and rubbish in general - Me When it comes to tidying, we divided the rooms up between us as well with the kitchen, hallway including stairs and landing and smallest bedroom going to me whilst, bathroom, main bedroom and spare room going to my wife. The lounge, being the biggest room is shared. However, things have moved around a fair bit with more and more being piled my way. My wife still does certain things such as the cat litter and putting the washing out to dry (taking the washing down, putting it in the machine and bringing it back up seems to have become my role...) As for cleaning, I have taken to doing more and more of that otherwise nothing gets done at all as it all seems to be too much effort... Aaaaand I think I'll stop here.
Pretty intresting so far. Nice to see I'm not the only one that struggles with litter trays. Today I started operation "embrace mother nature" with the cats (yes I locked them out!) I have added a couple of other things that sprung to mind.
Usually, as I get home from work, my wife is either dishing the dinner or finishing up cooking. So, to give her a break, I do all the weekend cooking and usually all of it when I'm off work. Washing up is fairly evenly split, but she probably does a bit more than me - still, it's only a matter of filling the dishwasher. She does the lion's share of everything else, usually while I'm at work. I help out where I can, but I'm not going to claim that it's a lot.
I cook (every single night) I manage all the money/bills (and i mean everything) I clean my fare share of the 15 odd pets we have I wash up (every single night) I clean (probably about 35-45% of the total cleaning) Washing 50/50 (except she goes though allot more clothes than me) Rubish/bins its right outside the doorstep, whoever fills it empties it (although I'm a recycling Nazi)
With only the two of us in the house, you'd expect it to be pretty clean and tidy. Sadly thats not the case, whilst we do our best to keep on top of everything its not always easy. Generally house work is shared out between the pair of us equally. She'll do the cooking and washing, I'll take care of keeping the kitchen clean and occasionally I'll cook. I do the hoovering as and when required, something I like doing if I'm left well alone to do it. She clean the bathroom (I hate cleaning the bog !) and I do things like changing the bed etc. We've lived here for almost 2 years and we still aren't really caught up with sorting all of our stuff out, and when I say ours, really I mean her crap. Under the stairs is full of junk, and our spare room is also full of her junk too. Some of the stuff she refuses to get rid of and I'm not sure why she's even keeping it ! That said my own computer room really could do with a clear out, I've somehow managed to get about 8 systems in there, either as full built working machines, or just in parts !
I hear you. 1500+ books which have not left the boxes that they came over from Holland in, almost 7 years ago...
1: I put the clothes in the washing machine and hang them up to dry when the machine has done it's thing. 2: I do all the ironing. 3: I do all the cooking even though I never eat what I have prepared. 4: I do all the cleaning be it dishes housework ETC. 5:I do not shop. period. 6:I do all the recycling sorting out for my block of 6 flats. 7:I look after the cat. 8:I do the gadget stuff I pay others to decorate.
I do: Most of the cooking occasional washing up occasional clothes washing/drying/etc Manage the payments for all the things DIY and fixing stuff Driving - as she has no license We share food shopping She does: Most of the washing up Most of the clothes washing/drying/etc vacuuming cleaning we share food shopping
Me: All the washing up/dishes (we don't have a dishwasher) Hoovering (when I get round to it ) General tidying/sorting Emptying the general and food waste bins Taking all rubbish (general, food and recycling) out and putting bins wheelie bin out on bin-day Wife: Cooking Clothes washing Ironing Empties recycling cupboard (no room for a bin!) Accounts Food shopping Dealing with cat/kitten enquiries Organising birthday/Christmas presents Shared: Looking after the cats (but probably 60/40 split to the Wife) Our split seems relatively fair when you write it down, but I find it very hard to feel that my wife does her "fair share"... Probably just jealous as I work 47+hrs (including commute) a week, and she works from home. My (week)day comprises: Getting up at 5am, get home ~5pm (except Fridays when I get home at 1-2pm) Do the accumulated washing-up, some other household stuff (tidying, cleaning, DIY, etc) while the wife cooks dinner Eat dinner, usually in front of the TV Finish what we're watching, then bed ~9-10pm If I'm lucky I'll get ~1/2hr to dither on the PC, but more often than not I wont get a look in as she uses it for work Luckily we're in the process of sorting out a office (we've split the spare room to create a new bathroom and a small bedroom which we will use as a office), then she can get her own PC and I'll get mine back, yay! Hmmm, that was a bit rant-ish, sorry!
My wife is now the wage earner and i'm a stay-at-home father. I do; All of the washing up All of the hoovering All of the cooking Washing of clothes Sorting and putting away of said clothing Organising the kids lives Changing all of the nappies Making all of the beds Family Finances Dates and Bookings for anything the kids need Organising fun activities All of the tidying Shopping for Food, Clothes and other supplies What she does; Brings the Money
Me and missus both work full time and we moved next to her work. What she does: - Drop and pick the little one from nursery - Feed her and cook most dinners - Put the laundry to wash What I do by the time I am home one hour later: - bathe to the little one - Clean up the kitchen - Hang and fold the laundry. Se usually share the groceries and most cleaning is handled by a cleaning lady three hours a week. She does more than me, but till the little one goes to bed it's non-stop, and even then there is still stuff to do and it's starting to drive me crazy. I am seriously thinking of using a laundry service since I discovered it's about £2/kg. Also will have to try online grocery shopping.
Me and my missus both work full time, and lead a fairly hectic life with outside work things, although I have football 3 nights a week whereas she has swimming and horse riding 1 - 2 nights a week. - I do most of the cooking would say 80:20 split - We split washing up 50:50 - We split laundry duty 50:50 - She tends to clean the bathroom - I tend to clean bedroom - Rest of house is split, depending on time really. - Shopping is normally done together on a fairly daily basis - Finances is 50:50 although I deal more with the investment side of thing, whereas she deals with savings. - She tends to organise things while I remember whats going on when. - I get rid of all spiders - I unblock any drains - I take out the bins - I complete any other "icky" tasks
