Xbox 360 Which HD do i want? 720p or 1080i?

A few of us have said 720p will be enough at that size already mate.
if money isnt really an issue then it won't be a waste of money going 1080p, sort of answered your own question there.
I think you should take your xbox into a shop and try the difference for yourself.

 

When I was using a 26" on 1080i, I didn't notice any difference when I switched consoles and started using 720p instead, I was sat about 8ft from the TV.

I'm currently on 24", and absolutely no differenece is noticed about 5ft from the screen going between 1080p and 720p.

If money is no object, then go nuts, but don't expect much difference

 

Unfortunately this is not the case though. When an Xbox game states 1080p on the back it means that the game supports that output and it will be scaled internally to that resolution OR output at that resolution natively. There are very few games on either system that do run at 1080p natively. Take Call of Duty 4 for example. The box states 1080p support but it is in fact running less than 720p (600p I think...). This is why practically every single 360 game since the release of the HDMI consoles last Summer has 1080p support on the box.

if you do change your mind and go for 1080p make sure it's a 120hz tv and not the cheaper 60hz ones.

 

Ditto. In spite of its high resolution, 1080i has a few minor annoyances with fast-moving imagery.

 

this. in a normal sized room you will not tell the difference between 1080p and 720p on a 32" tv. and interlaced video just sucks.

 

720p looks better (imo), so I would pick 720p, but try both 720p and 1080i out, and see which one you prefer, it's different for everyone.

 

On many lcd's, possibly all but at least on the one's i have seen anyway, 720p will look better than 1080i, but if you have one of those 1080i capable crt's, then 1080i will definitely look better. I have seen a couple of the cheaper 1080p lcd's not look as clear as a good 1080i crt, especially for things like skin tones & water.

When it comes to lower color depths however, such as gaming, then 720p + lcd beats 1080i on any screen.

 

That would rely on the quality of the image processor in the television, wouldn't it? The chip in my Pioneer plasma de-interlaces my Best Motoring DVDs so superbly that it's as if the discs were printed in progressive scan mode.

 

Frankly telling I would be happy with 1080i...

 

1080p is best but if you can't get that, 1080i is the next best thing!

 

Since I'm in your area budget- and distance-wise, I'm choosing to go with a monitor rather than a television. Reason being that you can get a superior LCD panel and deeper resolution for a lower price.

Since my setup's in our smallest bedroom, I realized that a monitor would better convey depth of resolution at close range. Also, lag and ghosting are determined not only by 1080 vs. 720 but also the kind of panel your kit happens to use. TN panels are fast for gaming but look cheap and washed out from different viewing angles. PVA panels look better but sometimes suffer from terrible lag. IPS panels are best for gaming and film watching (highest combined spec for fast response and viewable angles) but can be too expensive. That's why I'll be picking up the successor to the Doublesight DS-263N when it's released in September: For $700, it uses the same S-IPS panel as the $2,000 NEC.

(Edit: I'm currently torn between the HP LP2475w and the DS-265W. Both use IPS panels, but the DS is larger and the HP has better connectivity.)

For TV, I'll be getting a tuner and possibly a 3x DVI/HDMI switcher.

 

At this size and distance 720P is going to be great. On top of that the xbox360 has hardly any games that support 1080P most are 720P. If you have a slow technology upgrade rate then I'd get the 720P because 1080P TV's wont cost much if you wait really long to upgrade, if you refresh fairly often then I'd get a 1080P and then it'll last you longer.

My family gets a new TV every 3yrs or so when SD was the tech of the days. Now we have all 1080P TV's and I don't think we're going to be upgrading very often, because who needs to plus size a 42inch TV when it fits the space perfectly and the picture quality is great? It's not like SD's where dirastic improvments in picture quality and tech happend often.

 

think im getting a 720p, have a friend in sony thats givin me a gud enuf deal and gonna get it after work. i dont think 360 games run much higher than 720p anyway and whats the point uprating it to 1080p when you can just use a 720p tv thatll suit it better anyway.

 

Xbox and PS3 games very rarely run higher then 720p/1080i due to the limitations of the hardware, so tbh unluess you will be watching alot of blu-ray films, you wont need 1080P

 

itll be a long time before i think about going blu ray so i thought i may aswell just get a 720p
