I've been considering opening a buisness selling pre-modded optical mice (any color you want, and possibly any mouse), and am curious :

how many people out there would be willing to pay something in the range of 15 $ for a pre-modded mouse (10$ for the mouse, + 5$ parts and labor)?
Nothing spectacuar in they way of the basic mouse, logitech 2 Btn, more to be seen later.

Anyways, I am not selling anything, and if this is the wrong forum please move it (to the moderators).

just testing the waters, i don't want to make a big investment and then loose it.

    thanks for the input

If you did a range of 2-3 mice, and posted a sample pic or two of the quality, I'm sure there'll be some interest. Would you ship to the UK (would bring great business)

It depends on how you mod them. I wouldn't buy anything, as I have successfully modded my own mice... But it's a good idea.

I think it depends on the quality of them.

I'd definately be willing to buy a couple and I'm guessing there's a huge market with people who don't want the hassle of doing it themselves so I say go for it!

Yeah, thats what i'm hoping for. Also, i haven't seen anyone selling blue optical mice, or any pre-modded mice. With how popular they seem to be these days, i'm rather suprised.

    Anyways, Sample Pics: :):):)

    Nice clean soldering Job:

For these next Pics, I wired up2 more Blue LEDs into the housing to make it really light up. It looks cooler in person, as my camera has trouble with dim light. The mouse really glows. Also, I am considering the "firewheel" mod: AKA Replacing the rubber scroll wheel with plexi.

In any case, I'm going to be away for the upcoming weekend (Damn "Family vacation") so dont expect any replies untill late Sun or monday.

Your image host has exceeded its bandwidth, maybe a new one would be a plan?

Still, pre-modded mice are a good idea, and if you set up a website with pics and details and maybe online ordering then you should do pretty well. :hip:

I think it would be a good idea. Especially for some of the more expensive mice such as the Logitech MX700 and MX900. I have a MX700 and would have modded it by now if it weren't for my lack of good soldering tools and fear of ruining my somewhat expensive mouse. If I knew that your work was reliable and high quality, I wouldn't mind buying one from you.

Though I'd have to say that since you're (obviously) voiding the mice's warranties that you'd probably want to give some sort of guarantee or warranty on your work. Doesn't have to be as long as the manufacturers warranty, but just enough to keep people comfortable with buying something that has been modified.

The only trouble with experimenting with things like the MX700 (and wireless Mice in general) is that they use specialised low current superbright LEDs. I have no idea how to get a hold of anything like that, and i don't know if they come in anything besides red anyways. It might be possible, but i don't know how much of a loss of battery life there would be.

Also, the intial investment would be much more if i wanted to sell modded MX700s, because i'd have to buy a few for inventory. I don't have that much money on hand yet.

In any case, i do posess am MX700 for my personal use, so I think you've inspired me to run some tests.

I'll probably get bact to everyone on the issue on Monday.

In any case, would anyone like a Blue MX700 or other wireless mouse?

If you find a super bright, blue, low current LED that works in an Mx700, would you care to share the information?

I guess the higher the mcd rating, the better, as optical mice have a fairly small beam pickup angle.

I just had a quick look and found this:

    Viewing angle: 15°
    Forward current max.: 30mA
    Reverse voltage max.: 5V
    Power dissipation PT: 120mW
    Light output typ.@ 20mA: 4460mcd

Can any anyone confirm that replacing the red led's with blue ones affects the resolution of the mouse ? I've heard conflicting reports on this...something to do with red light being easier to track...?

Took apart my MX700, the actual replacement seems simple enough for me.

Anyways, i haven't had any tracking issues (I'm testing the modded mouse right now). I think the rumors related to tracking come form people who use ridiculously underpowered LED for their mods. I'm using 4000 mcd Blue LEDs currently.

Also, I am looking into whether other colors work as well. A green mouse would work really well for all of those "Radioactive" and "Biohazard" themed cases out there. And what about White?

    Viewing angle: 15°
    Forward current max.: 30mA
    Reverse voltage max.: 5V
    Power dissipation PT: 120mW
    Light output typ.@ 20mA: 4460mcd

If thats true, then I'm very happy.
Where did those stats come from? also, what model mouse is that led from?

I figure it'l probably be about a month, perhaps less, untill i get things together. It all depends on how long my orders take to go through. Also, does anyone know more about transactions between two people over paypal? I think i could do that if it's not a huge hassle, and in any case, there's always ebay.

    Back Monday

In other news, Nobody seems to be selling LED Moded mice yet, even on Ebay. I've got my own niche market.
