Yea, a gander is a male swan. But if you take gander as an avian term then the joke works because then it doesn't matter what the bird is.

Black Swans rule. Where i live there is a lake outside the house that has 21 (maybe more) white swans and 2 old (about 17 years and more) black swans, ive seen both of those blacks clear the white swans away with no trouble, they rule the lake. hahahaha
