The Radeon HD 4770 might boast 40nm technology and an £80 price tag, but can it batter modern games into submission? We put XFX's HD 4770 to the test against some of its nearest rivals to see if it really is the mid range king it claims to be.

 

I'd buy it just for the sexiness of the card to be honest.

 

It's a pity they couldn't have got the power requirements down so that it didn't need a pcie power connector. Looks like the 4670 is still the king of the 'no power cable' hill.

 

Is it possible to add a HD4870 512mb to these benchmarks (even if its results are from a older review) to get a comparison? The 512mb version can be picked up now for a little over £100 (£115 seems around the average from OCUK / aria) so it would be interesting to see what the additional £25-30 buys you in terms of raw GPU grunt.

 

How about benching the 4770 in crossfire compared with a 4850 crossfire and a single HD4870 X2?

Another thing is that, there is no way you can find 4770's now without paying more than £100+. They've all vanished...

Not to derail this but, can i ask a quick question? How do i determine wether X memory clock counts as 2X or 4X effective?

 

GDDR5 memory doubles the effective bandwidth of GDDR3 and GDDR4, as it increases the bandwidth per pin by a factor of 2.

Anyway I was just wondering about your 7/10 value rating, don't you think it's a little low? I mean this is a card that can beat the 4850 on some benchmarks/games which retailed for £120 at launch =\ Not trying to be critical I've just never understood your value ratings ^_^

 

I'm just a little confused by the SKU numbers...

If I want this card with the better cooler, I get the one with YDF7, right? Where YDFC and YDLC are the older coolers similar to the one seen in the Gigabyte review? The picture in the price link didn't serve to help me at all.

 

Only 4770 cards I can find anywhere all have a different cooler. Where can I get the one in the review?

 

I'm actually quite suprised by the gts 250's temperature at load. a 100 degrees is a LOT!
