I'm trying to find some good games to play at home on a LAN with family/friends. Ideally the cheaper the better so I'm not looking for the latest and greatest (eg last weekend we played Quake3). We found that overall we preferred playing "co-operative" than against each other. They don't have to be FPS games but RTS I find can be too longwinded for my tastes. Anyone have any suggestions?
The coop in delta force Joint operations and typhoon rising are really awesome. My friends and me play them all the time. Pluss Joint ops isn't that expensive and the other game modes rock too, (team kill of the hill my personal fav) Also, if you like car games Ive been playing midtown madness and midtown madness 2 for almost 7 years. Many many hours of family play with cops and robbers and capture the gold.
If you have a look around theres quite a few free (legal) games about, easy place to start is http://www.gamershell.com/fullgame_download_archive.html Heres a couple to get you started. GTA, GTA2 RTCW Enemy Territory TrackMania Nations Be warned!, Track Mania is really addictive once you get into it, my clan and I played it for a whole day at the last lan we went to There is a version of Duke Nukem 3D that has been ported to XP, the multplayer works fine locally or online too Edit:\ Yeah Midtown Madness 2 - Cops and Robbers mode kicks ass
We usually play at LANs: Counter Strike 1.6 Sven Co-op and complete HL co-op Its an amazing game and they are working on HL2 co-op as well. Dawn of War C&C: Generals/Zero Hour Although, they all cost money but they aren't too expensive.
The Serious Sam series of games. Such a laugh in co-operative, totally brainless shooting. But read up on it before you buy it. It's a bit different to your average FPS.
I have the demo version of the original and it's great. I'll keep an eye out for the full games. Nice find on that site FIBRE+, I'll check that out more when I get home tonight. Please keep the suggestions comming in.
Know it isn't what your wanting, but if you do want a RTS, try Dawn Of War. You can pick it up cheap, and it is fun as hell. Other good games include Freelancer, it is a space based game where you build up your ship and do missions, and you can play it other the internet with friends and LAN. Also you don't have to stick together, so you can go off cruising in it while your mates do missions. It isn't free, but should be dam close to it seeing it is quite old. Graphics are still top form though, don't be worried.
This ones a little older, but if you get a decent group of people (10 and up) Tribes 2 can be a whole shitload of fun. They have CTF, siege, defend and destroy, anything your heart desires. WHOLE LOT OF FUN.
Try CS 1.5 or 1.6 depending on witch you prefer. the is also the Age of empires trilogy, or solder of fortune.
i'm mad keen on Day Of Defeat source at the moment.. thats great fun... but the best fun i have had in a long time in a lan was with garry's mod. After about an hour of random killing and painting each other invisible and spawing massive antlions we eventually decided to play forts, just like you do when your about 5... Build a fort and then using the traditional guns, we attacked each other.. first to get all the basket balls into their base wins! Then we had a game of football and then a game of who can make a rocket that fires people into the ceiling using baloons and fire extinguishers. Oh and car racing... its so much fun!
There's a very good DOOM3 coop mod out there which is freaking rad. Also one of the things that we'll be playing at this weekend's LAN party is GTA: San Andreas multiplayer. It gets exponentially more fun when you add more people in. MATH: FUN = X^2 where X is the amount of people.
it's basically like natural selection except for a few thigns 1. it's 100% free (based on the opensource Q3 engine) 2. it's less complicated then NS 3. it's FREE
