I'm looking to get a new steering wheel and have found a couple that I like the look of (very plain motorsport-style OMP/Sparco ones) but I'm not sure which to get. It basically comes down to whether I want suede or smooth leather on the grip.

I drive the car to work and back every weekday and I was thinking suede may be a little harsh on the hands for a daily drive? Does anyone have any experience of using both day-to-day? I need a bit of help weighing up the pros and cons :D

id go for a leather wheel, ive had leather momo's in the past and theyre great.
ive seen the suede ones and i just thought that on a hot day or when youve got sweaty hands it would be a PITA as it would go all soggy or something. ewww.

I've no experience of day to day use, but a friend had a suede wheel in his astra (nuff said), the problem with suede is that it can stain from the oil in your skin, you need to do a bit of work to keep it looking good - regular brushing to keep the pile etc.
Leather looks good and gets better looking through use.

the sparco looks more rally slag, but as said above theyre a mare to keep looking tidy with use too. but i dont think either of them are really suited to the car though, the OMP one would be ok but without the yellow line maybe?

If I can find the exact same one but without the yellow line then yes ;) I'm really very picky about the look of steering wheels, there aren't many I like.

Why don't you think they suit the car?

thats fair enough i guess, it is a thing you might look at alot whilst in the car.

i just think theyre scream rally wannabe, and i dont think youre car is that sort of thing really. id be more inclined to go for a more executive wheel, to suit the car a bit more.

For bare hands and daily use, I'd go with leather.

Yeah, my car's definitely not a rally car, but it's also definitely not "executive" either :D To me those wheels just look like motorsport wheels in general, be it rally or track based.

no your car isnt an executive, but its more executive than rally car.
id just want something a little bit shinier if it were my car instead of rugged looking.

If you have to replace it, I'd go with the leather, deffo. Otherwise, what's wrong with the one that's on it already?

I'd go leather, if you take it to the track put on some nice gloves.

The standard wheel is a bit bigger than I'd like and is plastic so not very grippy or nice to use. I'm modifying various bits of my car to make it more fun to drive. I consider it the same as using a decent monitor on your PC. It's something that's often overlooked but makes the whole experience of using it much nicer ;)

Well, I really prefer the looks of the Sparco wheel but based on what people have said here and elsewhere I'm going for the OMP :) Thanks for the help.

Nice steering wheel does make a lot of difference. It's more of a mouse and keyboard upgrade IMO but defo go for it. I prefer smaller wheels personally also i dont like being able to see my fuel gauge easily :/

    leather all the way :)

what about this? i have one (320mm) and its amazingly ergonomic and solid.

Out of the two above, the OMP looks more user friendly.

Yeah, mushky, smaller wheels are nicer and it's pocket money to fill up the tank in my car anyway ;) I'm not keen on that Momo wheel, it's a bit too fussily designed for me, I prefer the really plain looking ones. I'll try and remember to get pics up when I get the wheel in so you can see how black and plain the interior of my car really is. Then you'll understand why something as shiny as that Momo wheel would stand out like a dog's d**k :D
