hi, bought a hiper slim case media box thing
    [IMG]
with a socketa mini atx mobo and 2800barton so could be abit warm in there... IF this is a problem and it doesn't cool enough i have a 2100 thoroughbred that would be cooler.
So basically what cooler. i was thinking the Akasa AK-360 Low Profile Socket 478 cooler BUT it has a 36db fan... so either a 80/60 kit on that heatsink if it would fit? (its 5cm high case...) or a different 60mm fan or cooler?because its only 21.5cfm i think so 7v mod on it woud still be around 20db's?

SO... WHAT Heat Sink/Fan Combo? OR What Heat Sink/Fan kit? OR What fan for that heat sink and will it keep it cool enough? and How loud?
    cheers

Well, that's like asking for a 'dry' martini =P most slim 1U server HSFs are LOUD to make up for being so slim. Bigger=more heat dissipated=quieter. I had dreams of making my XP mobile 2200+ a fanless setup, but it just hasn't happened. The quietest I've gotten so far in my silverstone HTPC case is using a thermalright SI97 and a zalman 80x10mm fan with the zalman resistor. I had to grind down the fins to make room for the fan, but it all fits in there somehow. My case is closer to 7 or 8 cm tall, so I had room to squeeze it in. I think you might be ok getting one of those slim 1U HSFs if you use a 'light' version of your cpu. IIRC, there were 35W versions of the smaller XP (sempron?) mobiles (1800+?) and a few in the 40-45W range...

I looked up the Akasa, and you may be able to kludge on a 70x10 or 80x10 fan, otherwise you could go for a 60x20 or 60x25 to get more cooling without increasing the footprint...

use the tbred and clock it down to ~1ghz, ~1.0v (or however low you can go... some don't like under 1.1v or so). It should run <20W then

nice tmm thats an idea i was thinking of or underclock to barton to 266 or fsb or maybe lower to be of a thoroughbred speed but with a barton cache size.
yeah think the 1ghz 1v idea would let me have it very slow fan speed.nice one mate.
this sounds like a great idea.its just I'll have to underclock and bench it at lower volts to find out whats stable... i hope my motherboad can do this... http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=111916

or you could dig up an old Via C3 800MHz-ish processor--those were in the 10W range! If you have hardware based encoding (Hauppauge 150/250/350 line) then you don't need to worry about oodles of CPU overhead to re-encode your .avi/.wmv tv shows to a more sensible .mpg format.
    [edit]

looks like the case can only take one add-in card. You may be painting yourself into a corner with that mobo/cpu choice. I remember spending literally months trying to find the right combination of case, mobo, cpu, and PVR card. If you bought the case just for a HTPC and had the mobo lying around, i'd suggest looking at other boards, preferably with onboard video so you can add a hardware encoding PVR card.
