A few weeks ago I did a new Windows desktop build. (build pictures here)Since then, I've been experiencing some very strange problems, and I can't figure out what is wrong.

    the main problems are:
All browsers are crashing randomly, including Firefox, IE, Opera, and Windows Explorer
Random restarts, including "system shutdown" error
I've also seen the "active desktop crashed" error several times, and I don't think I've seen that since Windows 98

I think it's software related, like maybe some sort of a driver issue, but I've installed all the newest drivers for the display, sound, and chipset and am still having trouble. I also installed the newest AMD drivers and it didn't seem to help.

    here's my configuration:
    CPU Type DualCore AMD Athlon 64 X2, 2600 MHz (13 x 200) 5200+
    Motherboard Gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G
Motherboard Chipset nVIDIA GeForce 6100, AMD Hammer
    System Memory 960 MB (DDR2-800 DDR2 SDRAM) [1 1gb stick]
Video Adapter NVIDIA GeForce 6100 (256 MB)
    Monitor ViewSonic VX2025w Series [20" LCD] (Q6Y062700060)
Audio Adapter Realtek ALC883 @ nVIDIA nForce 430 (MCP51) - High Definition Audio Controller

I am using the onboard video and audio. I have another video card, but I was having some trouble so I took it out to eliminate possible problems.

Oh yes, I am using Windows XP Home, installed from an SP1 disc but fully updated with SP2

Any suggestions would be helpful. I've built lots of PCs before, and never encountered a problem like this.

    Thanks!

Sounds like either faulty RAM, or possibly faulty HDD.

Here's what you want to do, first of all, start fresh, partition then format the HDD again and install Windows XP. Maybe wait it out to install SP2 to see if the error is recreated. This is the easiest & quickest way, which is why it's usually suggested first. You can try any method first, doesn't really matter.

If the problem still persists, run memtest.
    http://www.memtest86.com/

Run that for awhile and see if any errors come back.

If not run a HDD diagnostic test.

If everything comes back okay and you're still getting an error, possible motherboard problem. There's not really a way to test a motherboard unless you have a spare one lying around. If the RAM & HDD are fine, I would RMA the motherboard.

    thanks!

I think I'll try the memtest first since I've already replaced the mobo once and I've reinstalled the OS several times, though I've never waited a while with SP1, so I may still try that after the memtest if it doesn't tell me anything. My hard drive is already partitioned, so reinstalling should be no problem.

No problem, I'm really thinking it's faulty RAM. Just sounds like a typical bad RAM problem. Though you can never tell until you troubleshoot. :wallbash:

thanks, I was starting to suspect the memory myself. If it's not an error, I'm afraid the mobo and memory don't like each other. I may go get a different stick of memory tomorrow and switch it out even if I don't get any errors from memtest to make sure.

Here's the readout from MemTest so far, just in case it tells you something I'm missing. It's still running.

If that doesn't throw up any problems, reduce the memory aperture size from 64MB to 32MB.

Just wondering what speed the memory currently running at? Memtest information shows your DDR2-800 running at 870, are you overclocking?

I was wondering about that. I haven't overclocked, could it be overclocked when I got it?

I got some new RAM today and switched it out, and it seems to be working well now. It's only been a few hours so far, but it looks like that was the problem.

    thanks for all the help!
