First of all, I have to apologize for my bad english.
Since I've recived good feedback from people in sweden I figured I'd show it on an international board aswell :)

The idea was to make a computer, with everything a regular computer got,
but to only be at the size of two 5.25" slots, so it could be inserted in a regular computer, and act as an independent webserver.

Here is the basic design I came up with
    [IMG]
Everything was modelled in Pro Engineer as exactly as I could, only had clearance at some spots that were less than 0.3mm.

The construction is made out of 10mm Plexi (PMMA) and 2mm aluminium sheet.

Most of the hardware up and running.

    CNC milled 2mm aluminium sheets.

CNC milled 10mm Plexi that was the "base" of the case.

A closeup on the CNC job done to the frontplate.

Gluing the pieces together to made it 4mm aluminium for the top and bottom.

Drilled the holes in the plexi with a CNC mill aswell.

Mounting everything together, took me over 6 hours ^_^.

Picture from the side showing how tight the construction was.

Child installing the software on it.

Mounted the exhaustfan on the rear.

And now it was all done :)

Size compaired to an AA sized battery.

    Backside.

    Right side with top off.

    Left side with top off.

And finally the computer inserted into my regular computer :).
Two leds are enough light for me ;)

    Specifications:
    Motherboard: Ipox IP-4MTS2B
    Processor: Intel Celeron M 1.6ghz
    Ram: 512MB PC3200
    Harddrive: Seagate 40GB 2.5"
    DVD-R: NEC ND-6500A
    PSU: PicoPSU 120W
    PSU2: Delta 230->12V 60W
    Case: Own design
    Power idle: 24W
    Temperature: 28C idle, 32C load
    Measurement(WxHxD): 146x85x220mm
    Weight: 2.05kg

Hopefully it'd be fun for someone to read and look at the pictures atleast ^_^

I'm also looking for sponsors to be able to afford making a new, even smaller version of this idea,
took me 8-9months before I was able to afford making this one :/

That board should have 4 internal USB ports on it. Any reason you chose to have that USB cable poke out the back end?

:EDIT: Sorry if that came out sounding crappy. Totally top notch work. I just want to get the hell out of work.

I tried to cut the cable and solder it to a connector to put on the motherboard, but I never succeeded, no signals got through. And using stock, full length was too big to be able to fit inside, thats why it's out the back :), but since the computer is to be inserted into a regular case, those two ports wont be of any good use anyway, and I put two ports on the front instead :)

Understandable. Quick reply to boot. If you took you almost a year to save up for it all, what was the final cost?

Final cost was about $700 I think, included in that was $200 of burnt hardware thought.
Took me that long since im just a poor student :sigh:.

As said, my english is far from the best. What i ment is that, even if the big computer is shut down, the httPC still works, and I'm going ot use it as a webserver to store files on. But ofcourse you can always use it like a regular computer aswell ^_^

awww. I thought you had meant to run it as an independant server and use it to host whatever website or files you wanted. Pity. It still looks really cool as it is; the SETI boys would love a computer that has a secondary section that keeps running once the primary is shut down, you should totally become part of the project. Completly unrelated, what is the computer running on as a monitor?

Is there anyway to install server tech on a normal PC such that you can get it to host domains or FTP?

Actually it can do that aswell :)
Im going to have it be able to upload/download files to it from a regular web-interface,
im still working on that part of it thought, got most of it running but needs some tweaking.

How did you get the parts CNC'ed? Have access to a machine?

I can't help but notice the converter that you have for the laptop drive. Did you make that yourself or is it a bought one? I would love to get my hands on something like that if you happen to have the link handy.

Nicely executed mod too... How's the noise on that exhaust fan?

I hired a person that had access to a CNC mill to do most of the work, and then drilled the holes in the CNC mill we have at school.

Unfortunately its a long time since I purchased it and I cant remember what they are called. I think it was somethign with "slim drive enclosure", try searching on that on eBay :). And for the exhaustfan, its from a laptop, a 5V fan running at 2.2V, its almost compleatly noiceless.

Double sweet, not only is it a sweet stand alone pc but it can also fit in a double drive by.
This has to be one of the sweetest duel purpose mods ive seen.
