    Hello,
I am wondering with windows vista if you can install it on a computer and then later install it on another computer. I am asking this as I plan to buy windows vista but plan to upgrade my crappy mobo later. Can I just install it again or call Microsoft for a new code?
thanks in advance for answers to my noobish question :sigh:

Not sure about Vista, thought you'll probably have to ring Microsoft for a new code. Only takes 10mins, all done by computer now.

I've got Vista Ultimate myself, and I can't imagine them not allowing for hardware failure or upgrades.

Buy a retail version, and you'll have absolutely no problems at all.
You can install a retail version on any computer ;)

I'm a little confused on the difference between retail and oem. so retail is for many computers and oem is for one use only? sorry for my noobishness

You can't install the same copy on as many systems as you like, all at the same time... even with the retail version!
Whilst you can install a retail version on any system... you can only have one copy of Vista running on any one system at a time (it's the same with XP).

With an OEM version however, Vista is forever tied to whatever system you install it on. It can't be installed on any other system.

okay, so oem only works once and retail can be reinstalled as many times as needed or is there a cap (like 5 times) that then after you have to buy it again? I tend to reinstall windows lots as my comp is always being upgraded.
    thanks for all the help!!

Retail can be re-installed as often as you like, without having to request a new activation key ;)

OEM certainly can be installed as many times as you like... but only on the system on which it was first installed.

However, the retail version can be installed on any system ;)
