I bet this has been asked before but I simply can not find an answer on bit-tech or google.

What thread type are hard disk screws? I'm sure they are M3 or M4 but I want to be sure before I go buying tools (taps and die's)

Thanks to those who answer! :)

    YAY! my 1st post!

I just measured one and got near enough 3.5 :worried:

Edit: Google says they're 6-32 UNC, so they're measured in inches :)

Yup, hard drives use 6-32 UNC screws, optical drives use M3. Probably because optical drives were developed by Philips in metricated Europe?

    Much thanks guys!

Bah now I need to get both a metric and an imperial UNC set of taps and dies...

If you're making your own screws, don't forget "0.150" (3.81mm) max. fastener penetration both sides" (Seagate). Too long a screw can foul something important inside the drive.
