I bet this has been asked before but I simply can not find an answer on bit-tech or google. What thread type are hard disk screws? I'm sure they are M3 or M4 but I want to be sure before I go buying tools (taps and die's) Thanks to those who answer! YAY! my 1st post!
I just measured one and got near enough 3.5 Edit: Google says they're 6-32 UNC, so they're measured in inches
Yup, hard drives use 6-32 UNC screws, optical drives use M3. Probably because optical drives were developed by Philips in metricated Europe?
If you're making your own screws, don't forget "0.150" (3.81mm) max. fastener penetration both sides" (Seagate). Too long a screw can foul something important inside the drive.
