(From Movieweb.com) Twentieth Century Fox has Mark Wahlberg (The Lovely Bones) in mind to for Max Payne, a live-action adaptation of the bestselling Rockstar video game that will begin early next year, according to Variety. John Moore (Behind Enemy Lines, Flight of the Phoenix and The Omen) will direct.

Wahlberg is negotiating to play the titular cop who is haunted by the tragic loss of his family and has little regard for rules as he investigates a series of mysterious murders. He finds himself up against an adversary bent on destroying Max and the streets he protects.

The script was written by Beau Thorne.

Interesting, IMHO. Think they'll have a sequence in the film that is like the 'slow-down bullet-time' feature from the game?

    Max Payne = Sam Lake.

The sequel was made MORE rubbish by the exclusion of this character. For me, THIS IS MAX PAYNE! (Sparta?)

Max Payne has enough of a story to make the conversion relatively painless, hope they do it justice.

And of course they will have a bullet-time effect, I just hope they keep him munching the pills like the good junkie he is.

It looks pretty good imho - have you seen the trailer? The guy they chose looks pretty much like Max. The story behind Mr Payne's antics is fairly easy to adapt too, so it should make a good film. :D

Why bother with this? As films go, it would be a fairly standard action-revenge yarn, with some late-nineties special effects thrown in.

Pixar need to do a Monkey Island cartoon, or Spielberg needs to adapt Zelda.

    Then I'd be excited.

At least he'll look something like Max and is, generally, a good actor.

I though the notion of turning Max Payne into a film had disappeared for good a long time ago.

I can't make up my mind about this, I loved the games but I can't see any benifit from making them into a film. I thought they were simply a mix of Hard Boiled (one of John Woo's finest works) and just about any generic hard bitten burnt out loner cop out for revenge in a Film Noir style, topped with a bit of Matrix type bullet time. I don't see there being anything to distingush this as a film from the crowd of similar titles which is a bit of a shame really.

I'd love to see the pretty Rachel Weisz play Mona Sax.

^ Ehh, not too sure about her. When I was first introduced to Mona Sax in Max Payne, I thought she was modeled by Rachael Weisz :eyebrow:

And, as often paired with Ms. Weisz, Keanu Reeves would make a convincing Payne with the right direction. His real-life is a mirror image to Payne's, sadly: his girlfriend was killed in a crash and his only child was stillborn.
