I'm looking for a really cheap computer, in the sub $300USD range, for my mom. Right now she's running a machine built in 1999 so just about anything is better than what she currently has. Anyone know any stores/sites where I can find this? I've looked online at some of the system manufacturers, but their deals are pretty terrible.
I already looked there. The cheapest is $350 and they want to put vista on it with the bare minimum of RAM. Not a good idea.
yah, but you should probably wipe the hard drive as soon as you get the computer anyways and install whatever OS you want. you might be able to build one a bit cheaper, especially with boxing day sales. also, ebay. or even your recycling depot. here's one for $129... http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27683&promoid=1087
Everex ($199 Linux PC), WalMart has another cheap comp, but I cant remember what it is. Check Tiger-Direct also.
Hmm... So I'd have to buy a $350 machine, and then a $50 OS? That would be even worse. I love you for that link though. All the parts it doesn't come with I have already. I'm probably going to upgrade that RAM eventually for her, but it's still a sweet deal.
Linux is free. Plus just about any distro will run smoother on underpowered hardware compared to Windows. Double plus, Ubuntu is really user friendly.
Linux would be fine for someone like me, but this is my mom's machine. My mom is about as adept with computers as your grandma probably is.
It's not like she's going to be the one installing/configuring it then? Firefox, Open Office, Pidgin, Thunderbird. Done and dusted?
399. bestbuy has a gateway with only 512mb ddr2 and a celeron 420 (conroe-L celeron) for.. $199. Drop in 2gb ddr2 for 20 bucks or so, and you'll have a decent computer.
I just helped my sister and bro in law convert to linux, they're amazed that the default software you can install is all free! But hey that's a different thread. That NCIX comp looks brilliant
why don't u buy different parts and assemble them! I think that would be a better choice and will come cheap!
Because most of the time you can buy a low end system cheaper than building it. Oh, I'm getting my mom a second hand pentium4 for about $90, and I just ordered that barebones system for myself. Eventually I'll get a decent graphics card for it, and an Athalon 64 X2 (assuming it's compatible with the motherboard... I haven't looked.)
