Case Mod - In Progress Project: Marcello (Updated July 12th)

Hey Everyone, I couldn't help but do a double header and finish this case entitled Marcello that I started around the same time as Nakamura but I didn't have time to finish. This project is based around the same Silverstone SG01 chassis that Nakamura is and will have the same front and back panel. The main wood of the case is Cocobolo, a wood from Mexico I believe with a really deep color and a very bad smell. The rest of the case will be brushed black aluminum and acrylic and mesh (i think) with accents of copper on the wood.

To get an idea of what I was doing, I build a small model of the case:









And then it was time to cut out the wood to the proper thickness, width and length:


I laid out the side pieces of the frame on a bit of mdf first:


For the joints, I would use a combination of half laps and rabbets. I guess i didn't take many pictures of this, because here are some finished joints:




I decided to reinforce the joints with copper pins. The copper also matches some of the colors in the wood. The pattern will be something like this:

On the top:

And here is the frame where it stands today. the holes are drilled and I routed a rabbet for the plexi/Alu to go in the spaces. It isn't glued up yet though:








Next up, I need to route a grove so the frame can accept the chassis. Then I am going to glue some of the pieces together while I figure out exactly how the sides are going to work. As an aside, I am putting Sangaku back together finally after the moron shippers destroyed it. Stay Tuned!

Anyone else notice that Greenie's model is like way better than most people's final effort?

 

I have you give you much credit as wood never seemed to be all that cool of an idea to me until I have seen your mods and how graceful and clean they look. Your attention to detail and perfection is certainly an asset to your skill set. Cant wait to see more!

 

I was thinking the same thing. haha. It looks great. I can't wait to see the final product.

I gotta say something though. I've always had great respect for people who can turn raw materials(woodm metal, etc) into something so beautiful. Anyone can buy a case and put some mods into it, but to build the case from scratch with no premade pieces takes some great skills. Don't get me wrong though - it does take skill to buy a case a mod it, but doing what greensabbath is doing is a step above. Bravo my friend!

That wood is friggen DARK. The copper bits will really stand out. It should look cool like that.

very nice choice of wood, and those copper pins are gonna stand out beautifully if you choose to not to make them concealed joints. Beautiful work as usual.

 

frig man, that model of te case should be in MOTM! your skills are wicked greensabbath!

 

Up to now this is your design i like best.
Your other cases are like detailed drawings; this one is like a drawing made with some very few lines.
When you can say a lot with much less that is cleaner and best.

Maybe I'm invading your place as designer but please do not use any more long pieces of cocobolo, let these stand out as beatiful as they are now!

I read Nakamura log again and I realized that you didn't gave us final pictures.

I didn;t post them because we had the article up on the front page... i think.

For the update! this project is getting close (relatively) already.

On the agenda today, I needed to glue up the three sides to themselves. For this I would use gorilla glue, tightbond wood glue, and the copper rods:

Now it was time to fit the Case over a chassis and cut the grooves on the wood so I can glue everything together. Since this is made for the same chassis as Nakamura (and I can't afford another one) I just used Nakamura's chassis, complete with back and front panels (although I'll make new ones for this case too).

Thats it for now. Next I need to figure out what to do for the side panels and then well, do that. Stay tuned!
